Got this 1787 Massachusetts One Cent Copper from the Old Woods today. I'm undecided if I should try to clean it or leave it as is. And if do clean it, should I just soak it for an hour in olive oil or boil it in hydrogen peroxide. Also found three 19th century flat buttons and a 1908 Indian Head penny.

After consulting with an expert on colonial coins last night, that cleaning the coin in peroxide would not really hurt the coin and that is value is under $100.00, I decided to give the peroxide a try. Final results are mixed - some details were brought out and some were taken away since the dirt that was highlighting some is areas is gone.
Thanks to everybody that responded

That's a nice coin; maybe you should boil it in olive oil ;D

Simply outstanding bookfisher :P ... Dude, I'll trade you hunting spots as the oldest coin I've found here in Oklahoma was an 1874 IH ;) ...

WOW! awesome coin and buttons!

I would suggest olive oil...seems like the least harsh way to treat a 221 year old coin.

do the potato thing.......

Re: 1787 Massachusetts Large Cent Copper

GREAT FIND!! I think I would leave it alone, sometimes you can lower the value by cleaning.

I am so jonesen for a large cent.. a 1874 in Oklahoma though is pretty dang good. youd be lucky to break 1850, I'll be lucky to break my 1834, here in Central Texas. My friend got a 1802 dime about a month ago,in great shape apprased at 19000 to 40000. Unbelivable, but true story I saw the coin, So it can happen

That's one heck of a find...I have some old coins that have been soaking in olive oil for several months and every time I take them out to see what they look like they look even better. Congratulations on the great find!

Wow, that coin looks fantastic! :o VERY nice. I would take a q-tip and some ammonia and swab REEEEAL gently on the dirtiest spot and see how it turns out...that's how I clean my IHs when I'm afraid the patina might flake off. Whatever you want...again, great coin! HH!

I really need a fainting smiley for this one! :D What a fantastic coin, Fisher! 8)

I don't think I would do the peroxide thing though after seeing the results of Mona's old coin last year. :-\

Congratulations on all those finds!

I would send it in for grading just the way it is, then they can't say it had been cleaned. ;)
At most, I would only use a soft toothbrush and some warm water and lightly brush it.

Re: 1787 Massachusetts Large Cent Copper

Great find!

In this case, please leave the cleaning to professionals. I don't know what it's worth but, anything you do will probably decrease it. Practice cleaning on common coins. Old roman coins can be had in the uncleaned state on ebay; their old, cheap, and fun to work on.

Just my two cents,

Jim

Some varieties of state coppers are quite rare. Don't take a chance, rinse in water and pat it dry. Mass. coppers can be tricky to attribute, but that is the only way to find the rarity. Don't take a chance on messing up a good one.

Re: 1787 Massachusetts Large Cent Copper

Great coin, Congrats. An hour in olive oil I doubt would take the dirt off.

Put it in the olive oil and forget it for a week, at least.

Fisher

Congrats on the Copper. Take a minute and Don't even think about cleaning that coin. Send it in just the way it is. I made the mistake once by soaking a $700. dime in olive oil. When it came back ungraded they told me how I had runied the coin and would be lucky if I could find a buyer for 80 bucks.
Again Congrats!
