I found this recently in a local field. It's not much to look at but I can make out the date and enough detail to identify it, so I'll take it!

Great coin, nice save.

Congrats on a nice find! Does the coin have a reeded edge? I hope so and if so, then it is extremely rare and possibly worth $250,000 or more if it will grade at least as an AG-03 or better after cleaning and conservation by a professional Coin Conservation Service such as NCS and then grading by NGC!

This is a good idea. Soak that coin in distilled water, or do a couple dry ice treatments, and see if you can knock some of the crud off without touch the surface much. Just to verify what you got and if its worth it to have the pros take care of it.

Dang JD - it looks like we keep finding the same coins. First the cut 8 reale, and now the 1795 liberty cap. I dug one of those last year, and it was in great condition for a field dug copper. Hope yours comes out even better, but be very careful how you clean it. Mine was dry-cleaned only - no liquids of any kind. Super find!

Variety is Sheldon 78....Very Common. Nice find. Hogge

Nice Large Cent. I hope it cleans up nicely for you but it can be tricky even with peroxide. I have yet to dig a Liberty Cap although I have dug dozens of Draped Bust LCs.

These Liberty Cap large cents are all important early American artifacts- great find !

I found 94 Capped Liberty earlier this year. If we wouldn't have gotten a pic fresh after it came out of the ground we wouldn't have any proof what we had. When it dried out we lost what little detail it had.
If It has that much detail I wouldn't touch it.
If it's at all crusty the odds are you'll loose what ever detail you have if you try cleaning it.
Just my thoughts...

Sadly this happens to some coins and especially some Copper coins due to the soil conditions and contaminants in the soil. For this reason, it is best to do a quick arrest of any verdigris if the coin has it ot not and quickly get the coin into a soaking of Mineral Oil, Extra Virgin Olive Oil or Kroll Oil to stabilize the coin from further decay. These methods are not just for cleaning and conservation of coins, they also prevent most coins for degrading any further by stabilizing the metal.
