Six hrs of hunting and my wish list just got shorter. I thought it was a half reale when it first came out. Looking at it in the sunlight for the first time I realized that Carolus was not looking to good, but man lady liberty was smiling back, wow. 1801 Drapped Half Dime. Its my first. My buddy Jay had permission for the field. He was there last year to witness my second gold coin in 1 month on his new site. I hope he doesn't stop inviting me... A 1777 1 reale and the 1900 o Barber Half dollar followed. Cant wait to get back on this field. Art

Half Dime is pretty interesting. You actually have 2 errors on the coin. You have the "LIBEKTY" error from the die that was still in use from 1800- part of 1801. This has the broken top of the "R" in Liberty. You have what appears to be a broken die, or die clash error where the impression of some of the reverse is evident taking out the top r. of the "Y" extending through the stars on the right obverse. Coins dated 1801...1803 , and 1805 are said to be the most poorly struck coins ever issued by the mint. I don't know if these errors add to the value or not, but just indicates probably an earlier 1801 struck coin with the use of the "LIBEKTY" die, or broken "R" punch. Nice coin.........Congrats. FYI......Some may argue a "cud" error on the second, but I'm pretty sure it's a die clash error. It's also interesting to note that the RED BOOK does not mention the "LIBEKTY" price for 1801. There is another Valentine variety (V-3) that I cannot find any pics or reference to. V-3 variety is listed as Extremely Rare with only about 3 examples known. Curious minds would like to know.

nice nice nice! doesnt get any better than that.

Banner find from me sir! Knock that one of the bucket list!

I do not see the libekty variety though. It's worn a bit at the top and if you look closely the R is complete.

Banner find, I'm on my phone, probably already banner! :-)

Killer coin shoot! You had an amazing day, congratulations! :occasion14:

That's a mega find man! BUH BUH BUH BANNER!

Wow, what a beautiful coin! Congrats on the banner.
Oh, umm, do you have Jay's phone number?!

Think you're right on this point. But look REALLY close and you can see a slight separation. I don't think it's enough for the "Libekty" variety though. I see the Libekty var, is very separated.

Holy guacamole!!:notworthy::treasurechest:

Sounds like a tough day metal detecting, jk.. Killer finds all day.. WTG!!! :notworthy: :occasion14:

Thank you everyone for your love of the hobby, and kind words. Also to Jay for the hard work making it possible for the 1801 Half Dime to fly high. Art
