1930 British Half Penny - Beach Detecting!

[connorghabra]

Found this 1930 half penny detecting Rehoboth Beach in Delaware last night at low tide!

It's been a resort beach town since the 1870's, so I guess it could have been dropped a long time ago by a tourist and and buried until the recent storms this past weekend.

Beautiful coin! Nice recovery!

It appears to be in a recently-dropped condition. It is lighter towards the center and around the rim like it has pocket wear. If it had been in a saltwater beach for very long, I would expect it to be corroded.

That’s what my girlfriend said. She was with me and saw it come out of the sand and it looked too perfect lol. I just am shocked someone would be carrying that around. Maybe a comfort coin for good luck?

The only other thing I could think of is that there was a couple of feet of sand removed and it was peak low tide right up against the water line, so I thought the coin could have been buried in deep wet sand beneath the waves about waste high out and wasn’t tumbling around for decades so when the nor’easter came through it removed those layers and kicked it up. Figured it being buried in the wet sand not tumbling around could help preserve it but I don’t know much about oxidation and it is in suspiciously great shape!

I rarely find any old or unique coins, so I absolutely love it regardless if it was dropped recently or many years ago!

Great looking coin.

It's a great coin that I and most MDers would be delighted to find. I wasn't attempting to take away from that by my comments.
