Can't figure it out. My thoughts were Christmas ornament or Cracker Jack toy? I'm probably way off . Anyone? I think it's brass

Yes, they had a different style each year, and each year they were dated. If you'll look closely during the scene in the movie "A Christmas Story", the one Ralphie is using is dated 1940 which also sets the time frame for the movie. Also you will note that the one he is using has some slight bubbling of the plating and oxidation which indicates that it is a real one from 1940 and not a movie prop.
