Been in a detecting lull lately, so I went through a bunch of Mercury Dimes I had and pulled out about 90 1942D coins, got out the magnifier, and started lookig for that elusive 1942/1 D overdate. About 2/3 of theway through them, I couldn't believe what I saw!!! Sure enough I had one! I tried to take as good of a pic as I could and this was the best I could get... You can see the extra long tail on the 4 and 2 little spurs at the left and bottom of the 2... thats all there is of the 42D overdate. The 42 plain overdate is more famous because the whole 1 is visible under the 2, but the 42D is just as valuable... just harder to detect.

There were an estimated 10,000 - 20,000 of these minted out of a total of over 60 million, so the odds are very slim to come by this variety. You never know what will turn up! Take care and HH, Mike.
