I took a trip up north to visit my sister for the weekend. She lives in Lake Oswego Oregon. On Saturday I had her drop my off at Mt. Tabor park in S.E. Portland so I could do some detecting while she took my two daughters to the mall for a day of shopping. After an hour on Mt. Tabor I had only dug a clad dime, a nickel and a couple modern cents, so I decided to walk down into the neighbor hoods to do some curb hunting. Before I left the park I found a black knife sheath on the ground and I picked it up ~ inside was a nice leatherman type multi-purpose tool! SCORE!!
Then when I was detecting the curbs I found a strip of dirt with no grass growning in it between a the fence of a parking lot and the side walk ~ at the corner of the street the side walk had "CITY OF PORTLAND 1916" stamped in it. The first target dug was a 1917-S Wheat cent, then a 1943-D Silver quarter, then a 1919 Mercury dime, then a 1910-S Wheat cent! Obviously no one had ever metal detected this strip before! After several times going over the strip I decided to move on ~ I think I cleaned it out pretty good. I snapped pictures of the silver 25c & Merc dime with my cell phone camera while they were still in the dirt before I plucked them up!
At the end of the day I ended up with a couple clad quarters, five clad dimes, two nickels, 36 memorial cents and six more wheat cents ~ 1940-S, 1944, 1951-S, 1953-S, 1955-D, & 1958-D.
Thanks for looking!
