1st Spanish Silver of 2011 & Nice Cuff-Sized Early Artillery Corps & NY Buttons!

Hey Guys. Got out and dug at an early site of mine where Jeff and I had dug some nice relics this past summer. Since the grass, weeds and brairs have died down alot more of the area is accessible and I decided I was going to have fun and dig for a few hours. As soon as I dropped my coil the first signal I got was a perfect bullet signal and I popped out a .58 Minie (alright :icon_sunny:) Another 10 minutes go by of me only getting a couple more signals that turned out to be can slaw and a bottle top, then I got a nice signal; very tight signal. The type of blip with no irony sound on the ends, just a straight small and tight blip hitting around 55-60. Good signal but alot of slaw and other stuff sounds the same way depending on the shape and size. I cut out a plug about 5" deep and popped it over and was looking around and probing with my Propointer and I locked eyes on this piece of silver with a straight clipped edge....(I was thinking clipped Milled Reale :)) but when I pulled it out of the mud all the way I immediately saw it wasn't a Milled but a Cob! It seems to have been in circulation for quite awhile much like the 1640 French Copper that Jeff found here. (This was a thriving little site during the Colonial Period and even had some Civil War activity as evidenced by the Eagle Buttons and Minies that I've found here.)
Towards the end of my hunt I dug a Excellent Cuff Sized Artillery Corps and New York Button back to back within 15 minutes of one another but by that time it was near dark (DANG SHORT WINTER DAYS >:( :P)...
Went back on Sunday and about 20 minutes into the hunt I got a tight PERFECT +91! That's a Half Signal all day long on my machine. I was hoping it would be a Seated since it was close to where the Eagle buttons were dug but when I popped it out and removed the dirt from the face it was a Walking Liberty looking back at me... :dontknow: Oh well, what you gonna do :laughing9: :laughing9:.....still a good sized silver and probably my favorite of the Modern U.S. Silver.... :laughing9: I ended up diggins several more modern silvers around it.
All and all, I'm Very Happy with this weekend's hunt and can officially put a check mark next to "Spanish Silver" for the year; although its worn I'll definitely take it, and an EXCELLENT Artillery Corps and NY button to boot! Have a look below and thanks a bunch for stopping by! :occasion14: :occasion14:

The ground is still hard as a rock up here Josh :( Your dirt look's great, especially with all the loot stuck to it  Congrat's on your Spanish Silver and some more awesome button's.Nice job.....see you in March :headbang:

The dirt yesterday was soft and moist! We got very lucky with this past snow storm last week as it went to the North and the South of us. This part of Virginia basically came out unscathed to our delight! You know it, I cannot wait either as this DIV is going to be a good one, I remember Beauregard the first time and it was great and BIG!

1st spanish silver !! I like your attitude and hope you dig many more. Great bunch of relics. I think right now is a much easier time to dig relics. This wet ground really makes them sing. Many time periods in that site. Thanks for sharing and happy hunting.

Nice collection of finds!

I'd be spending some more time there when the weather gets a bit better.

Look forward to seeing what else comes out of that area.

Congrats!

Thanks Guys  :icon_thumleft: That's just what we call a day of city diggin here in Virginia :dontknow: They were all dug from this same site. You saw all last year nearly every hunt of Jeff and mine we had Colonial and Civil War relics. If y'all knew how this site was laid out, it would make total sense where the modern silver came from, half of it is a big yard with short grass and the other part is woods. The modern silver came from near the grassy area right along the walking path..
The reason for such a huge span of history is that this area was the first place that John Smith and the first colonists stopped on their way up the James River before founding Jamestown. From that point on (Early 1600s) it was inhabited by colonists. Then, during the War of 1812, the whole Hampton Roads area was heavily fortified against the British after they devastated Norfolk and the surrounding area from the Sea with their huge Gun Fleets and then marched into the city and set it ablaze. Therefore, you find alot of War of 1812 buttons and relics. Fast forward a few years past that to the Civil War and it was the epicenter of that Conflict early on with the Clash of the U.S.S. Monitor and C.S.S. Virginia and saw heavy buildups of troops from both sides right in this very same area. Then I don't even have to tell you how many soldiers and sailors were in this area during both WWI and WWII with the largest Navy Base in the World smack dab in the center of Hampton Roads (this is where alot of the modern silver comes from). This is why, on any given day, if you know the area and your history and can get permission at the right spots, you can go out and dig relics that span the whole entire history of our nation; quite literally.
