Here are some close ups of the rope.

Also of the one coin i cant identify (with a bad drawing of the faint image discernable)
That coin is bigger than the 1 real and smaller than the 2 real. (Id realy like to confirm this coins type aswell)

Im still thinking about the test Aarc sugested. Im worried i might damadge it. I doubt i can cut off a big enough peice to do the test acurately.

Just use a tweezers and pull a small starnd if possible...
If not... leave it be.
Don't destroy ...

Um... also you MAY be able to test this on a strand end that is "poking out".

You pics... no offense ... are a little blurry imo...
The detail of the "rope" is neg...
Really cool piece...
Never seen anything like this... both in comp and a design.
Neat find.
Looks like it has some age to it.

PS> "Rope"... may actually be "sinew"... if "foul" smelling when burned... this would be the case.

I doubt its sinew, ive seen leather rope before and it doesnt look or feel like it. Looks like rolled fibers of a sort

Looks hempish.
Artificial sinew is nylon looking in response to a flame ,(a black wet end that burns). Does not look like artificial sinew though.

That is a really interesting item you have. It's my opinion that it was made by native peoples. I look forward to seeing it properly identified.
You might want to Google the word sinew. It is absolutely nothing like leather .

p154.jpg teaserbox_4094721147.jpg Sinew does not "look like leather"... Leather looks like leather.

I do however understand that in certain instances and conditions it can appear this way...

Here are some pictures of sinew in various states,...
Middle one I think is"artificial sinew".

Those strands look thicker and coarse, my rope is soft and almost fluffy. Many tiny strands together almost undescrenable. I tried your test, i only managed too remobe a very miniscule amount. It didnt burn black, i dont think it smelt foul, i saw the cord glow red and ember but it burnt up realy fast ,was small peice
Heres a better photo i think.. You can see my dilema i got no where to remove string, its all a tight knot i can barely make out the end of the cord.

The cord is of 4 main cords, each of these 4 cords is made of many more tinyier cords(look very close in zoomed photo), only thre frayed but of the cord is fluffy partly from cutting. Look and the unzoomed photo closely for better resolution, looks like hemp. Im quite confident its hemp , jute also seem to be a good candidate ty

If it was hemp, it would smell very distinctly of burning rope or cheap pot during burn test. You made no mention of either smell.

Lol. There is various reasons for my omission,
I honestly tried
i couldnt remove enough for any type of real productive burn test, i literaly didnt have enough time to look at it and then smell , i just watched the small fragment disapear. Smell around here would mask the cheap pot smell , my sence of smell sucks... What does burnig rope smell like?

What are you trying to tell me?
What does it mean if it is common cotton cordage?
They did they have that 200 years ago?
