Did some tree planting and I figured I'd earned a two hour hunt break=6.5hrs later :laughing7:
So back to the corn patch down the road to hit it again. Even though the actual site is only a couple of acres it seems to just keep giving up the finds, but the corn stalks suck!
Got the 1815 Half Penny which is in pretty decent shape compared to the thin 23mm crispy one I dug next. The Crotal Bell is a thick honker 55gr and I believe it's one of the thickest walled bell I've dug to date.
I dug silver, saw what looked like the rim of the coin, a little silver showing so I threw it into a water container and looked at it an hour later. In the meantime I had visions of different coins and years then the cold reality of seeing a silver washed, shank less button in the water. :(
Over all it was a good day a few different finds like the bone handle, a very chewed up piece of lead about the size of a musket ball, what looks like a knife handle end, and more silver washed flat buttons that have the loops, the little rivet thingy has some leather still attached and it seems to have a gold washed washer under the first part.

Nice finds. Looks like you had a good day.

Thanks bonepicker

I think one of the nicest finds was getting the 6.5 hrs instead of the 2 hrs that made for a better day.

Beautiful half penny and love the crotal bell

Thanks

sweeet haul

Thank you

I really like the Half Penny.
Outstanding job.

Thanks against the wind
It's makes for a good day to dig a keeper or two.

Nice finds :icon_thumleft:

Thanx digging440yrs

The 1815 Half Penny came out looking beautiful Jim! :occasion14:
The crotal bell is definitely an oldie, love all those flat-buttons too.

That field certainly looked interesting when I saw it back in September, nice to see it was worth the wait for you!
Bet there's an early Vickie silver in there too, patiently waiting for you to find it bud!

Dave

Good stuff PJ, yeah that bell is a bit different looking, certainly not quite typical.
Nice condition on the 200 YO copper.

Thanks Dave
I had to click a few shots with the dirt still on it and to shoot you a text.

I'm hoping for something before a Vickie but it looks like there wasn't a silver to be lost. I guess it was a little premature sending you the text saying "I think it's a silver" just forgot to add "wash button" :)
Wrong corn field, this one is about a km past where you turned to go south on the other highway system. The one you saw is still high in corn, but I see the harvesters out on the weekend at the farm I was at so the later crop is starting to go, which means more fields open. Most of the beans are gone, so maybe the tannery/station fields are done by now, so we can hit them soon, and they'll give up some more Tokens and buttons.

Nice finds.

Thanks Brian

It's a thick walled one for sure, and it sounds great kind of a deeper sound to the bell.
You're digging some nice looking finds as well.

fantastic shape coin there…gotta love when copper comes out looking like that...

I scratch the head in wonder why one can pop up looking so nice and 50 ft away they're burnt to a crisp,
Still having a day like the one you just had would be better, but beggars can't be choosers when it comes to digging in newer dirt.

Nice haul PJ. The bell is sweet. However, that green half penny is the treasure for me! Very well done.

I'm still out on which one I like the best, the Half Penny I can just look at, as for the other - "I can ring my bell" :)

Jim. Those are two coooool coppers my man! The one with the ship is especially cool as I'm in the merchant marines. Bravo!

Steve

I like those tokens. You guys up north have so many varieties you can find.

Great finds! Love seeing some good old Canadian history...I miss detecting :( Thank you for sharing!

The Ship Token don't pop up often and there also the Blacksmith versions as well of this one.

Thanks for the reply ColonialDude

It's always nice to dig up the early stuff from in and around the area.

No detecting? That doesn't sound good.

Would to love to know more info on that half penny?? Is it a tradesman or business mintage?? If so, by who?? That thing is a beauty, and has me intrigued. Definitely would love to know more about it, if anybody has any info. Thanks in advance.

Thanks Chestdiesel

Not much written up on these tokens, here's what the coin book wrote:Basically they are listed in the Anonymous Tokens section

Nova Scotia depended on shipbuilding and trade with Great Britain, the United States and the West Indies and tokens issued bearing these legends were readily accepted. Thomas Halliday is credited with the design.

The coin is in great shape - nice detail and patina as well. I've found a few marred musket balls over the years. How do they get like that? I have no idea. ???

Thanks for the reply STC

I've got a piece of lead that's been chewed by a ground squirrel or mouse. I thought first maybe a cow but the indents are too sharp and small, it's just one of those strange things we dig over the yrs.
