I don't think anything from the reverse lines up in this area, so I'm thinking possible die polishing marks or just part of the design?

Both parts of the "L" look the same thickness to me.
Maybe get a closeup of LIBERTY?

I don't know if the Mint die inspectors do this or not but, I have worked around tool and die operations before and the inspectors would mark the area that needed repair on the dies with tiny letters and numbers that would be removed along with the area to be repaired and or polished.

I was wondering if they do that at the Mint. It wouldn't be all that difficult to NOT completely polish out something.
I have discovered that while cataloging and tracking that massive nearly destroyed die cent that I posted a while back.
I've found others with the same crack worse and better and really early in the break when it was just a small crack and the die maker polished it out.

I find this highly fascinating!
I can't get enough and it is helping me break this depression shell.
