Hi Everyone,

I took the AT Pro out Saturday because the temps were in the 70's. I went to an area that had old houses that were cleared for pending construction.

I was out of the vehicle for less than fifteen minutes when this find was made. I tried around the base of one tree, then a second tree. At the second tree, I got a reading for a coin. So, like we all do, I started digging.

45 minutes later, the readings had stopped and I had pulled a total of 255 coins out of one hole. This is the largest amount of coins I have found in one hole so far.

I haven't cleaned any of them yet. But, it looks like all pennies. Still 255 in one hole.

Also found a 1955 coke bottle in the same hole.

Haha I used to bury pennies like that when I was little!

When I was little. My baby-sitter's daughter and I would bury old costume jewelry, coins and etc and make "Treasure Maps" for each other to find the stashes.
I should go over to that old house and see how many we never dug up!
Keep Digging!

That must have been one big pocket to hold all those coins. No wonder they spilled out!

Congrats!

I haven't checked the dates yet. Just been busy with some home projects. I did see one from the 70's so it didnt make me think that I was on to anything too valuable. I will post the oldest and newest after I go through them. Probably not going to happen until this weekend.

The whole time I was thinking about that scene in Stand By Me where the kid buried his pennies and couldn't find them again.

Here is the coke bottle I found in the hole.

One of our fellow Treasurenet members in the Bottles and Glass forum, goes by Surf, was kind enough to provide the bottle date and information.

"It's a 1955 Chattanooga Glass Co. example. Maybe a dollar or two in the marketplace." - Surf

I just realized something. That Coke bottle goes with a Pepsi bottle I found in late November at the local lake.

Its a circa 1950 - 1960 Pepsi Cola bottle.

Wow that's impressive. That's deffinetly a once in a lifetime find.. Congrats

WoW Patrick!, Thats wild! How deep was it down?....Now you got some good Practice for that Silver Cache your gonna find one day! Congrats!!

They were between 2 and 4 inches. They were at the base of a tree. At first I thought it spilled from someone's pocket sitting there. But, after I pulled out so many I had to retrieve a ziplock back to put them in, made me think they were buried.

Yep, definitely looks like a burial to me. Maybe they were once in paper rolls that have since disintegrated. As exciting as the initial discovery was, it must have been frustrating to keep finding pennies!

You beat my best coin spill by 248 coins!

That would of made me happy, nice find

About 30 years ago I found 153 cents in one hole. It's still my record although I did find a pocket dump of 17 coins and the last one out was a Barber half.

No matter what the dates are, you definitely hit a good spot. You came home with 2.55 more than you went with. Awesome find and thanks for sharing, HH.

Matt

Very cool, Congrats!

It was kind of funny finding it. There was a small flat rock there and I put the first one in my pocket. Then, I kept finding them and started piling them on the flat rock. When it overflowed, I put them all in a side pocket on my cargo pants. Then I started another pile on the flat rock. When it overflowed a second time, I got a ziplock back out of my gear bag. I would move a small hand shovel of dirt and each would have 3 or 4 pennies in it. Honestly, it isn't worth much in monetary value, at least, I don't think so as they haven't been cleaned and gone through yet. But, it was just cool finding that many in one hole. The coke bottle was a little deeper down.

I did send an email out to the local metal detecting club about the spot since there was no way I could work the location by myself. The next day a good number of people came out to check out the rest of the empty lots. The cleared location is like four square city blocks.

That's a great big pile of pennies! I hope you had a heavy duty pouch to carry all that weight.

The most pennies I ever found in one hole was 55!

Ok, I just went through them all. It is amazing how the zinc pennies corrode faster than anything. Some I couldn't read the entire date, others I couldn't read the date at all and some didn't even have Lincoln on them any longer.

Almost seems to be a coin collection (or part of), as there seems to be just about 1 of every year. If you get what I mean.
