Hi everyone I don't know where I should metal detect I have a garret ace 150 and theres a farm with history next to me but how do I tell what to look for because its miles of land

FIRST practice ddigging in your yard till you can dig a hole and leave no sign hole was ever there when you leave.

Hi Leon and welcome to metal detecting.

As has been suggested first learn how to dig a hole and when you leave it folks can not tell you were there.

In metal detecting for things people have left behind you want to start where they congregated. Picnic table, around shade trees, out in the barn, the standing spot around a corral watching the animals, a swing or swing set, the wood chopping location/pile, any tree that kids/adults could climb as climbing or hanging upside down in a tree tends to empty pockets, jungle gyms and then do not forget the clothes drying line as this is another place where pants are hung upside down.

Swing your coil over a target as many times and in as many directions as it takes to locate the center of the target location, usually/in general this is when the signal is loudest.

Welcome to the addiction. Learning how to retrieve a target and leaving the area as you found it is a strong start on having good habits. Garrett has a book called, "Successful Coin Hunting" by Charles Garrett.....It tells where to hunt and offers locations that you might never think of. Its a must have book.

If the farm structures are still there you can work foot traffic and areas where people would congregate or be repeatedly for coin hunting.
If they are not standing your imagination comes into play. Where they kept transportation,obtained water,sheltered,outhouse,summer shade,ect.
Sometimes research can turn up a map or photo of layout.

Gleaner. Also check out videos on Garrett site as well as utube. I've been viewing them for months. Watch how they locate and dig. ChicagoRon has a great detecting 101 video. Digging holes and other tips. I recommend it to all detectorists. I'm new as well but you'll learn practice makes perfect. Like making a test garden. It's a great way to figure out sounds and depths. Hope this helps

Great advice here. Metal detecting has nothing to do with a brand, nor a model. There are much more important things to master before you become a seasoned detectorist. Its like learning to drive, it has nothing to do with the car.
