That's awesome. Is it a lighter or some kind of container?

NOT SURE... seems more like a container than a lighter as it has a seam all the way around it

Has 2 pieces of wood in it the same length as the container/lighter with 2 identical notches cut into the wood up n down

Nice match safe ! are their some hallmarks ? - looks 1920's -30's to me

Beautiful! The challenge where I am (beach) is to find the second earring after finding the first. Most times you only find one. But if you find a part of something, it sometimes pays to do a tight spiral around where you found it to find the missing piece. Glad you got the whole thing! Nice personal engraving on it, too. Awesome!

Don't see that everyday...that's what I love about detecting...you never know what you'll pull out..

That thing is beautiful... and engraved too. Very nice!

and it is a match holder...you can see where they strike the match on the bottom here.

That's a rare beauty for sure. I am an engraver so I can really appreciate that personal touch which was likely hand engraved, not like the computer machines I use today.

Very nice piece !!

My thought as well. The hallmark on these are often on the lip under where the lid would cover it.

PS. just saw the mark where I said but it gives no clues as it says STERLING (therefore not British)

ya-- see the STERLING but there is no other markings .

I might take it to a jeweller see if they can straighten it out and fix it up.. I love the design--

Not following you. Didn't the Brits use Sterling before 925? Doesn't it simply mean it predates the 925 mark?

Anyone have any ideas on the date of this thing and/or its value if any

Not interested in selling it of course..but would like to know everything about it if possible

Dates between 1868 when the sterling standard was adopted, and 1904 when silver "had" to be marked .925 in an oval. Just found out too that the decimal point was dropped in 1973.

That is so cool!!! great job

I. P. Typically on English silver one finds an extensive series of hallmarks including - makers, city, date letter , monarch profile , and metal quality (lion profile =
sterling )

Some European countries have a similar series of marks also .
