a box of dimes and a nice surprise

Today I went to my main pick up bank to get a box of dimes which had come in earlier this week. There was a new teller there and just like all new tellers say she asked "a full box?". One of the other tellers piped up and said they had a really really old $10 they had saved for me, and she continued to stress that it was old. In my mind I am thinking probably a 1954 series or maybe even a 1937 series but it turned out to be a 1971 series in decent shape. I guess 1971 seems old to a 20 year old who doesn't collect coins. I haven't got a full box of dimes in a few weeks and the rolls I have searched in between have been skunks. This box also turned out to be a skunk. I was disappointed about the box but the old $10 was a nice surprise.

i bet in canada you all have to do the drop test all the time other wise it would take forever!

I dump the roll out and go over it with a magnet. Canadian dimes are either made of nickel (magnetic), steel (magnetic) or silver (non-magnetic). The silver doesn't pick up while all the other coins do.

I wouldn't trust this checking method. If the magnet is strong enough (and usually any rare earth magnet is) a big amount of magnetic coins most likely will pick up a silver one as well. Visual inspection or inspection by sound are preferable and time efficient.
