The ground is indeed frozen solid here, but that does not stop a pick ax. I went back to a stretch of road that my father both have permission on, there are fields on either side for a good ten miles and about 5-6 pre 1830s and late 1790s home sites. I decided to search a home site in a field that we had not done much in but the last time we went to it we had dug up around 5 or six forks and spoons. This was also in the general area that I found my 1825 Capped Bust Dime and 1772 King George III Half Penny. I could not dig many holes due to the 1 foot thick layer of frozen dirt on top of the unfrozen layer, but I was able to pull my first Draped Bust, an 1802 Draped Bust Large Cent:

Really nice find ! I wish you could extract that reverse impression and frame that with the coin and story - the green patina is nice too !

Nice DB LC

A word to the wise though, many a coin or relic has been damaged trying to dig in frozen ground.

I love the idea of you banging away with a pick ax! That's some super hardy New England-style metal detecting. You have officially inspired me. Now...how do I get through the 10 " of snow we're supposed to get on Thursday.... Congrats on the well deserved find!
