IMG_20170514_191642.webpMe and my son went to a older park and a permission today. The park has been well hunted found some clad and a piece of a old die cast car. We had permission for a little lot so went there. It had a lot of metal pieces in the ground causing a lot of sketchy readings which I am sure you all have had lots like that. I got a couple of wheat pennies and a gold cladded bracelet. As we were about done I got another deep sketchy reading so I dug it. I cut my plug over the pinpointed area and went about 7 inches down. I put my probe in and it said it was way off to the side of the plug. Being as that is what the slaw and metal pieces were saying I figured it was the same so I carelessly stuck my shovel into the side of the hole instead of digging it and scratched it good pulling it out. I was sick at scratching it but happy for a first for me, a seated dime. Thanks all for looking and hope you are all doing well and staying safe. Thank you all for your kind words. I added a new picture of the scratch, there is no discoloration in it, I did scratch it, my camera is not the best sorry. The scratch is the shiniest part of the dime. But I do appreciate the words of encouragement thank you and lesson learned.

Congratulations on the nice seated dime! Not to worry, we have all done it and probably will do it again. :dontknow:

Don't feel bad I found my first seated dime 3 days ago and it might be counterfeit. Congrats on your treasure.

I have never scratched a seated coin. Oh, wait I have never found a seated coin to scratch. Congratulations on your first. The scratch is what it is. We all get in a hurry in trashy areas. We learn.

I brutally scratched an absolutely pristine 1913 Canadian dime a few years ago, made me sick lol. Since then, just like Against The Wind says, I always try to make a large and safe hole when digging sweet signals.

Congrats on a nice Seated, it's a really good find!

Nice find.
I consider myself an expert pinpointer, I have dug dozens like that where they are still in the side.
I got to thinking, how can I be dead on with most coins and way off on some ? Answer, if they are on an angle they will do this, when they are flat they don't. On edge are unpredictable they can be either. I guess the angle casts a somewhat phantom location back to the detector.
I carry a secondary digging tool [nice stout 5 in 1] in my back pocket, specifically for coins like this.

Scratched? Where?
Hey, I'd be PROUD to dig one of those puppies...!
You did GOOD! :icon_thumright:

I just use a fiberglass reinforced plastic garden hand spade I bought at lowes for $2. It hasn't scratched a single coin yet.

Ok, very mis-leading pictures, the scratch looked dull. Back to feeling bad...lol

Oh well, it does tend to happen on your best finds but from this point on the mind is more focused.

Ok...
New pic shows it... arrggg.

Now I disagree with the disagree... and re agree with the OP. :P

Yes what he said. You can call that grade an SS or AG grade coin. Slightly Scratched or About Gouged. However, having it is the best part and I wouldn't complain at all. Things happen

Awesome dig on that Seated! As you can tell by my signature I still have yet to find one. Reminds me of the time I unearthed a beautiful 1929 Mercury dime with perfect hair detail and got really excited. I flipped it over to find two things - an S mint mark, and a huge gash running down the front of the coin parallel to the bundle of sticks. I was like "NOOOOOOOOOOO!" So we've all been there. Your coin is still very beautiful and a fantastic find!

Great coin. Too bad for the scratch, but that is a lesson that will stick pretty well.

I know I have scratched a few.

I find a lot of coins on edge, so when I pinpoint them, I pull a plug out that is about 6" deep and pinpoint again.

If the center of the pinpoint location shifts off to the side, I alter my digging to the new location, and use my pinpointer.

I usually get close with the pinpointer before the shovel.

Usually...

Congrats on that seated dime!
I did the same last summer to a silver coin.
Dug it after running into so much iron, so I didn't think it was anything but a horseshoe and ended up locating it badly and whacking the heck out of it.

Great hunt!
