Some of you may recall last week that I posted half of a piece of metal which may or may not be part of a name plate...either way, I went back to the site to try to find the other half. I spent about 2 hours this morning looking (until it was time to pack up and go to class) for the other half but was unsuccessful. I did manage two nice finds though (along with a bunch of trash). The dime looks pretty good but is basically black. I think it would clean up nice. What do you all think, should I clean it? It came out pretty clean looking, it's just really tarnished I guess??? The flying eagle is nice, but if you can see it closer it is pretty worn. I put it in peroxide for a bit.

I put mine in those cardboard slabs, and then slabbed it again in a bigger one. LoL....sorry for the confusion.

They are both great looking coins. Don't mess with them!

Post the other dime...that is a great flying eagle cent and i would leave the dime the way it is.... :)

Awesome digs Kevo Congrats on the flying eagle that and the barber are in great shape.

yes I would like to see the dime also....amazing how some coins can come out of the ground in such great condition....I don't know how the penny held up....but the dime being silver would be nice to see... :)

You should see the silver dime I found in Indiana, I double slabbed it because it was so nice. I found it about 2 inches from a gravel driveway and used a horse hair brush (same kind they use at car washes) and it was nearly perfect-1841 -O- dime. I can post it if anybody wants to see it.
please do post it !! it's always nice to see things i've never found. i'll show you some lincoln memorials if you'd like !

:D ;D ;)

I'm amazed also at the condition of that FE cent. It almost looks like a clean coin that someone pressed moist dirt onto before the picture was taken.
No soil debris at all in the lowe edge, etc. And why peroxide a coin that looks like THAT??? Holey moley...the cents that I do the hot peroxide on are done because you can't even get a date from them for the amount of corrosion and degredation.
While not really trying to say this is not an honest report of a find...I AM just completely and utterly flabergasted at that coin's condition.
I haven't been that amazed at a dug coin since those V nickles were pulled out of a rotten tin cup with no packed dirt in the cup or on the coins and NO corrosion on the nickles! Who knows...maybe the 12% nickle composition helps them hold up better than the 5% tin/zinc mix in later cents.
I wanna live where THIS stuff is found! Ohio soil must be like sulfuric acid by comparison.

I would hammer the living crap outta a site that produced those two gems in such a short hunt.

If that penny come out of the ground than THAT is the BEST Flying Eagle Penny that I HAVE EVER seen come out of the ground! It looks like it fell out of someones pocket yesterday. :)

As we are discussing condition. Remember my post above? The coin came out of a field that has been ploughed since medieval times (therefore ever since the coin was lost). In the last 50 years showered with phosphates & other chemicals. You saw how most coins were bent & broken. However this one came out like new, looks far better than the photo (ONLY CLEANED WITH WATER). I found a similar 1811 last year, black from tarishing & dented.

How do you explain my coin?

kevo,

Sweet flying eagle ! Good for you! Joe

The KCS is biased towards dudes having a 3,000 year advantage. :D

Nice find Kevo. They both look great to me. I really like the design of the FE penny.

I have one in my collection and would love to add to it.

I remember a while back when you bought one for $5....a great deal in my opinion. If you get any more for that price....I'll give you $10 for it...ha!

Your coin is silver and I have pulled and seen so many absolutely beautiful silver coins pulled from the ground. I believe the Flying Eagle cent has caused people to question because it shows no corosion at all. That coin has to be a recent loss, a child losing his parents coin, a show and tell loss. I believe that would more likely be the reason it is in that condition. Morgan Dollars, gold coins, Buffalo and "V" nickels found in tot lots, why, because kids lose them. My 1858 Flying Eagle is in great shape as far as "fattie" coins are concerned, but that coin has not been in the ground long at all, BUT, that doesn't mean it wasn't a recent drop!! Still a nice coin!!

Is that another one lying on the ground in the 1st pic what kind is it please do share 8)
