Some of you may recall last week that I posted half of a piece of metal which may or may not be part of a name plate...either way, I went back to the site to try to find the other half. I spent about 2 hours this morning looking (until it was time to pack up and go to class) for the other half but was unsuccessful. I did manage two nice finds though (along with a bunch of trash). The dime looks pretty good but is basically black. I think it would clean up nice. What do you all think, should I clean it? It came out pretty clean looking, it's just really tarnished I guess??? The flying eagle is nice, but if you can see it closer it is pretty worn. I put it in peroxide for a bit.

First of all congrats on the great finds.

I would not clean the dime I like the way it looks. The flying eagle is nice even if it is worn.

Your Flying Eagle is better than mine...those soil conditions are kind.

Kevo, the 2 hours was time well spent..those coins are just awesome! Looks like you have a great hunting spot..hope there's more there for you.

Nice flying eagle. i still dont have one of those yet.

What is a 1858 flying eagle? Qrter?

Leave the other coin as it is. I like black silver adds to the character.

Wow they are both nice. I wouldn't clean either one.

It is a penny.

Very nice finds. That flying eagle is much nicer than any I ever found. HH

That flying eagle looks incredible. You may think it's worn, but those flying eagles tend to look pretty crappy... that one has nice detail left. I've never seen a dug one so nice! It's like it was never in the ground or was in a super well protected spot.

The dime is already scratched from being rubbed with dirt on it ;) so you can clean it with baking soda and water to shine it up if you like. I like to leave 'em alone for the most part, but that's my personal preference.

I always make sure not to rub the dirt off a silver coin in the field. The soil acts as an abrasive and will leave a ton of hairline scratches. If the coin was valuable, that rubbing would reduce the value by quite a bit.

Cool find i would probaly just clean it with soap and water so it keeps that antique look.

Kevo..great job...I applaud you on hunting before class... :) I have only found two barbers this year....the first one I found also has that black tone to it..in fact looking at it now it is even darker! But obviously that hunt paid off for you! Outstanding coins! :o

Kevo,
Very nice job! Great looking coins.
That's it, I'm moving to Kentucky! ;D
Congrats,
MM

Cleaning only devalues them...Leave em be, they look nice and original

By judging from your field shot of the Flying Eagle, the coin looked to have NO corrosion on it...why did you do a peroxide bath? I don't think it would have needed it!

Also, from your FE field shot, it looks like the lower edge is perfectly clean...I am suprised there is no surface dirt caked on it...that must be some great soil conditions. :D

If that penny come out of the ground than THAT is the BEST Flying Eagle Penny that I HAVE EVER seen come out of the ground! It looks like it fell out of someones pocket yesterday. :)

You should see the silver dime I found in Indiana, I double slabbed it because it was so nice. I found it about 2 inches from a gravel driveway and used a horse hair brush (same kind they use at car washes) and it was nearly perfect-1841 -O- dime. I can post it if anybody wants to see it.

What does double slabbed mean?

As far as I know a "slab" is a coin that has been graded and encapsulated by a reputable grading service. NGC, PCGS, ANACS for example. I have never hear of a double slab.
