And I have not been able to get out there and do anything significant. The thing is full of water. It is on a ridge and the well or whatever it is is 12 feet high and made of stone and cement. I can't believe water can fill this thing so high above ground, it doesn't make sense. I will get out there with a waterproof camera and drop it in.

Thanks brother. Please review the suggestions I mentioned earlier before dropping in a camera. They may really help your effort.
The closer parts of the woods are what grab my interest right now - I stumbled upon a 1/2 dozen people in medieval clothes doing some kind of I-don't-know-what thing yesterday.
First, I want to congratulate you on keeping your cool with some of the posts... Not only is taking it slow the right thing to do for safety reasons, but clearly a bunch of them missed the part about it being on public property and the authorities giving you the ok to check things out so long as you returned things to their original state (IE not chisel and sledge to the cap...). Ignore the rest of them, stay the course, and keep us posted.
I'm going to guess that was a group of LARPers (Live Action Role Play). That is where a group of people dress up in period clothing and fight with foam or wooden swords...
In addition to the weight on a string suggestion, I would see if you can find your self an ice fisherman... I have an underwater camera that I use while ice fishing that has a battery powered monitor, and a water proof camera on the end of a 100' cable. Mine also has a built in Infra-Red LED light system, and a detacable white light LED flashlight.
Much appreciated, August.
A buddy is coming over tomorrow at 10am with an underwater GoPro and diving lights and a strong line for dropping the camera into the water.
I'll hopefully have some pictures or videos tomorrow eve.
I have some stills.
Waiting for my buddy to send the video.

So here's what we learned yesterday:
- the camera and lighting work well.
- dangling the camera on a rope gives us no control. We need a pole or something. The mound has a pear shape and we cannot get to the sides using a rope.
- We need to point the camera at a more downward angle instead of leaving it horizontal because we can only see the sides of the mound.
Here's the first video we made. It has a ghost at the end...!
