For as much as I love finding jewelry, I started metal detecting as a relic hunter. Summer lures me away with the promise of gold, silver, and things that sparkle but it just takes one trip like this to remind me why I metal detect. The round silver looking thing is an I don't know, its not silver wish it was. The rusty looking blob is I don't know either but until I do figure out whats under the crust, I keep it.
The area has to be one of the most calming serene places I have been. There is just something so relaxing about being out there. If you don't look north and see the hotels and condos of South Padre then you can easily imagine life about 150yrs ago. Not much has changed on this little strip of land. I love relics, they tell a story a forgotten one, the history and life we pass up everyday how much we take forgranted. Relics like this remind us that freedom is not free, or entitled it was bought and paid for in blood. This bullet was never fired, could it of saved the soliders life had he not dropped it, or did it save another soliders life because he dropped it. How many men lost their lives there fighting for what they believed in, and the sad part that both sides were right. If nothing else these relics remind me how easily our country can be torn apart by politics. Will we see our country again at odds against each other? The sad truth is that it is very possible. The stories that lie just beneath the sand here, whisper to me how possible it is.
