just some dirt images for your virtual hunt
i don't know if there are any artifacts in these pictures.......but i do see a blade on the right side of image #7 just about 18" below the dryed up weed
i just walked along the north edge of my garden and snapped away
lots of broken material laying around

"Just rub it in!"
I believe there is a point sticking straight up in photo #8.

And in photo # 10, it looks like the base of a point in the bottom circle, and although I am not sure what it is but the top circle appears to be that Rainy Butte material.

Has anyone ever sifted though an area like that? It seems like you would find all kinds of goodies.

well actually not we just turn the dirt over and wait for a rain

but a good idea anyhow

In the third picture, in the same rut as the green plant on the right is a round white object. It is below and to the right of the plant. Could that be a game piece or just my imagination. And is that the blade I circled in the second picture? I would probably go blind from looking at that site. I need glasses after looking at the pictures!

hey hey dennis it does look like it could be in #8

and #10 the top sure looks like a piece of rainy buttes silicified wood and the bottom circle i think it is possible?

I would hunt on my hands and knees there! Looks like a Jasper scraper in image 11.

hey thanks 1320
yep it looks like jasper but i think it is RBSW (rainy buttes silicified wood)

it does resemble a scraper but i don't ever remember finding a knife blade or scraper made from RBSW as it did not hold an edge very long.........
........however it is just great to flake and work with and we find arrow points made from that material

Hey Larson, Very interesting post, photos, and artifacts. I am curious about all the bone you find. I suppose it is not actually fossilized bone, just somehow well preserves in that environment? What sort of age are the bone artifacts you find, 100 years old, 500 years old, thousands of years old? Just how long does the bone typically survive in your area, and do the bone artifacts you find typically survive longer in the soil than non-artifact bones because they were specially treated somehow by their users, polished, or maybe surface saturated by the oils in the users hands?? Thank you, and HH.

nope not fossilized
i don't know the exact age but it is all over 350 years BP because this site was gone by 1700 or so
the bone weathers away when it is exposed to the ultra violet rays and the air.......
....as long as it is under the surface it keeps a long time.........
.......the bone material survives the same whether or not it was a tool or just plain bone
i don't think anything from the users hands would make it last longer or preserve it longer..................
............but the polis from the users hands is very pretty on a piece just being exposed from a rain for the first time since it was covered up

So how much does it cost in fuel to deep plow a field? A guess would be nice. I know not all fields are the same size. The crops here in some fields had to be plowed under and re planted but they still arent doing very well even on the 2nd planting.

i would guess for a 30 acre field about a 100 bucks diesel fuel at the most or 200 bucks for a gas tractor.....
......diesel tractor will have more power and use less than half the fuel than a gas tractor

i don't have a plow, i have two john deere model 100 chisel plows with 18"sweeps (duckfeet)
i have the depth control set at five inches maximum so as not to damage any lodge floors from the earth lodges that were there
there was up to 90 earth lodges there
since 1988 i have taken care of this site and have never planted anything.....i don't think anything has been planted there since maybe 1950'when it had some alfalfa on it

here rock fyi......these images are off the artifact topic here and if anyone disagrees with them please tell me and i will remove them
just so you can see rock this can be set at shallow depths from 2"--7"

Thanks for that info and I would guess the fields I hunt to be at least that size if not bigger. One set I hunt is a mile long but 3 teirs high if that makes sense to you. It has a bottom a middle and a top fields like 3 teirs. I havent even been able to hunt much of the above fields yet. Hopefully in the winter I will be able to hunt them. No telling what is there waiting for me to find. Thanks
