I had recently moved to North Carolina and was back visiting family and friends in Virginia. I got up with a buddy of mine and we headed to King George county for a day of digging. After about 8 hours of digging we had a few keepers including a pewter pocket knife and an old pocket watch. We really hadnt found any civil war relics except a couple of musket balls. My buddy says to me "hey you about ready to go" I said I was and headed toward him with my machine. I got a signal on the way toward him and decided to dig one more hole figuring it was another can or bottle top. I got down about 3 inches and saw the edge of an oval piece of metal. I pulled it out of the hole and there it was a US belt plate from the civil war. I jumped up yelling and running toward my buddy. The excitement was incredible. All these years of digging and I finnally got my first plate. I thought I would never find one! It was a day I will never forget.

That is a sweet find. I don't think I will find one of those in 50 years of detecting....unless I move or greatly expand my detecting horizons.

Enjoy.

That is an amazing find. What type of detector are you using, Whites?? Whites (and maybe other makes) might pay you for the story.

Wow! That must have been some hole!

Congrats! That's paying your dues for sure. Great find.

:D :D :D :D Some times you can be so dry and stale Charlie, but at other times you just slay me. :D :D :D

I love the look of that Buckle. Better than those perfect ones cause this ones got character. You can just imagine the person who wore it and the hardships he was enduring, all recorded within that single piece of history. 7 years huh,12 going on 13 here and nothin quite that exquisite.
Congrats, lucky dog ;D

Congrats on the find .. Very cool.

WTG,I would love to find one myself

Saw a show once that had a US buckle plate with a hole through it(battle damaged) and the guy who found it(CW collector) was saying that a wound in the abdomen would of ultimately led to the soldiers death in those days, and went on to say that this type of buckle is becoming more desirable for CW collectors and can bring a higher $$ value--if you were to sell it that is.(not that i would)

Congrats on your discovery
Shawn

He didn't immediately...was too excited and we had to take pics of the plate in the hole. And he's being generous at 3" down...more like 1.5" to be exact. The grass in that yard is sparce and about 1/4" tall...that plate couldnt have been any further than the bottom of the roots. Never seen one in all my years that shallow (except in a cleared site or plowed field). We went back and tried to find the other arrow hook but it wasnt in the hole...then covered it and in a week nobody would ever know we were there (cut plugs on three sides, flip plug out of the hole, use plastic to put the dirt on, then pour dirt back into the hole flip the plug in and tamp down with the pressure of my boot...our typical procedure to make sure there's no sign of us and that a lawn mower cant pull the plug out of the hole).
