I had recently moved to North Carolina and was back visiting family and friends in Virginia. I got up with a buddy of mine and we headed to King George county for a day of digging. After about 8 hours of digging we had a few keepers including a pewter pocket knife and an old pocket watch. We really hadnt found any civil war relics except a couple of musket balls. My buddy says to me "hey you about ready to go" I said I was and headed toward him with my machine. I got a signal on the way toward him and decided to dig one more hole figuring it was another can or bottle top. I got down about 3 inches and saw the edge of an oval piece of metal. I pulled it out of the hole and there it was a US belt plate from the civil war. I jumped up yelling and running toward my buddy. The excitement was incredible. All these years of digging and I finnally got my first plate. I thought I would never find one! It was a day I will never forget.

Congrats on the buckle find! Thats definetly a keeper. It looks like you have found a site worth spending some time at ,finding that buckle only three inches from the surface is a real good indicator that it hasn't been searched too thoroughly yet.Welcome to TreasureNet ,the best site on this earth. Keep us posted on your finds ,thats a killer piece.

I am the 'buddy' that took John diggin Saturday and was fortunate enough to enjoy the (extreme) excitement when he dug this plate. For those that have ever seen a person running as fast as they can jumping (literally) for joy, flailing their arms over their heads and screaming at the top of their lungs, then you can picture what I saw!!! After finding about 10 of them during the time I have been hunting it was about time that he got his first...he was overdue if you will. The site has been passed over many times over the years by diggers but John just happened to have a horseshoe up his butt that day! And it was such luck that I happened to say "you 'bout ready (to go)" and he changed directions by about 90 degrees, walked about 10 yards and...BOOM...there it was. Not many other period relics to be had (mostly post-war to 1950's stuff, but that plate just jumped out of the ground into his pocket. And what a beautiful patina it has as well...that pic doesnt even do it justice (found in a housesite front yard)...not a 'field' plate with lots of lime action...just a nice chocolate patina. One of the (arrowhead) hooks is broken off and wasn't in the hole so my guestimate is that it broke off during the period and was cast aside for a new one. I can honestly say that this was one time that I had not one iota of envy...it just made me so, so happy to finally see him dig one. How fortunate and way to go, John.

Nice, it just goes without saying "you never know when your going to dig something nice". That thing is in great shape.
