After my last hunt...I KNEW there had to be a SEATED COIN hidin' in the iron

Well I told myself after my last hunt; that finding 3 Barber dimes and 2 injuns was a perfect way to end the season. However...there was also this little nagging voice in the back of my stubborn, buzzed head that kept saying..."You know there had to be some seated coins in that park you putz". ;D

Needless to say...I ventured out into the cold to see if I could "hustle" up another coin or two from this old beat up park that gave up the 3 Barbers and 2 injuns last week. Don't get me wrong...I was...and am 100% satisfied with my hunting season this year. :) The problem is..and it isn't really a problem...is that I love this hobby and the joy it brings me. :icon_sunny: It is a challenge each and every time I go to one of these pounded parks ...to pop out one more deepie that someone walked over....including me. It is also a pleasure as much as it is a challenge...because of the way it absolutely chases the depression or stress away. :angel7: It truly disappears as soon as the headphones go on. This hobby is PRICELESS...and is absolutely in my blood for life. :icon_cheers:

I truly don't think there is anything left in this park at depths of anything less than 8"...unless it's hidin' in heavy trash. On a good day...I might get one or two signals per hour to investigate. On a bad day...well the pouch is void of anything other than a couple tiny pieces of wire...and maybe a few rusty nails. ;D When I can bring myself to take off the S.E.F coil for a few minutes...I'll pop on the 6" Excelerator and see if I can't pull another deepie or 2 hidin' in the dense trash...but the 10 x 12 isn't coming off anytime soon. :headbang: It just continues to amaze me every time out...and just seems to hit an older layer of goodies left in the ground by others..including myself ...using other coils. :icon_thumleft: I know for a fact this park has been...and IS "explored" on a regular basis...because they were the ones who tipped me off to some activity here around the turn of the century. :occasion14:

After a short while I ended up right back near the big tree where 2 of the 3 barbers came from last time. I got a deep injun right off the bat...and the blood was now flowin'. 8)

About 15 minutes later I got that sweet faint warble I was hoping for...and it repeated fairly well. It was a real faint sound and I would have liked to have seen the depth meter...but seeing the screen at this time of day is absolutely impossible. ??? What time of day you ask??....almost ANY time of day? :D It just drives me nuts :tard: ...but it has also made me more in tune with the SE...since I can't ever see the screen and must hunt pretty much by sound alone.

Anyway I dug a nice plug down to 9" and it was like rusty sand at the bottom. Almost like a big chunk of iron had dissolved and faded away into the soil....and there was also a piece of an old rusty bolt there as well. ??? I ran the probe and it sang  ....so I snatched up a little clod and pinched it. Out popped a rusty THIN slug. I turned it over though...and saw the glimmer of silver peeking through. :angel8: :blob5: I could barely see a wreath through the rust...so right then I knew I had one more Barber from this site. I carefully stuck it in my pouch next to the injun and plugged away.

About 30 minutes later I got a deep token and then came accross another injun/token type of hit...and it sounded DEEP. After finally having the moon...stars...sun...clouds...etc...lined up just right...I was FINALLY able to see the depth meter ;D ...and it was buried. I dug down 10" and popped out an old stick pin/brooch...but it looked like a big, piece of junk encased in crusty dirt :-\ ....so I just stuck it in my pouch. 8)Little did I know that when I cleaned it later...it would turn out absolutely beautiful....and was sterling silver. :sunny:

I plugged along for a short time longer and popped out a tax token and one more injun. By now I could barely feel the ends of my toes... the ends of my fingers... had stuff frozen to my face....and began to mumble to myself. It was time to leave...before they found me frozen stiff :D ...with my right hand still knotted in a clench around the SE ;D

I got back to the car and pulled my few goodies out of the pouch to see what I ended up with.
I picked up the silver dime and put on my glasses to try and see through the rust covered front. My heart skipped a beat when I thought I saw a glimmer of a seated lady peeking through. :blob7:  If I held it just right...I thought we could make out the outline right above where the date should be.

Once I got home I started to try and get the crud off the coin to see what I had. I worked over 2 hours on this coin trying to get the rust off of it. ??? In all my years of detecting...I've never had a silver coin this hard to get clean. 8) ::) Finally...after a ton of baking soda...a ton of lemon juice.....and a sore finger and thumb from rubbing ;D ...an 1877 Seated Lady peeked through the crud. YIPPEE. :D :icon_sunny: Glad I listened to the nagging voice in my head that told me to go hunting today. :angel7:

My take for the 2 hours...some peace and solace...an 1877 Seated dime...2 more injuns'..a tax token...and the absolutely beautiful Silver stick pin/brooch.
I also found a tiny little piece down over 8" that is the size of a thumbtack head. It is in a pic by itself and looks like it has some lettering on it and was also enameled at one time. I have no clue what it is. If anyone can make something out...please let me know.

This has been an amazing year for me...and this hobby has gotten me through some very tough times. Thanks for sharing this with me...and good luck on your next hunt. :angel7:

Bryce, that is so awesome. Congrats on that seated dime. I don't think anyone works harder for their silver than you !!!

Your posts are so detailed. I felt like I was right there with you diggin' that hole...

I too can't wait to see your year-end post. Though, I'm not convinced you won't be adding to it. Sounds like it would take a blizzard to keep you from getting back out there.

Congrats on the IH too... (wouldn't be a SilverFreak post without an Injun in the pic !!!).

Brian
Thanks Brian. It has been fun...while very challenging. I haven't found a merc or wheatie in the last few hunts...but I'm getting deep enough to find stuff still there...and it's old.

Oh to have a place like that wow. Congrats on the dime.

Burdie
Thanks Burdie. It's just a normal city park like any other...and it's been pounded to death...but there's still stuff hidin' there.

You are a true pro with that machine! I'm glad you are still able to get out and hunt, I might go into withdrawals if I don't get to read about your detecting adventures. Keep at it and I'll keep readin'.
Thanks for the kind words Damon. I'm hoping top get in one more hunt or 2 over the next couple of weeks. It all depends on how long the ground remains digable ;D

Great finds. You amaze me with the stuff you keep coming up with. I'm going out tomorrow and try for some treasure myself. I love the SE and enjoy the serenity I find when hunting. Going to hunt an area that has given up 2 seated dimes, 1 seated quarter, a LC and about 70 3 ringers this month. H.H. and thanks for sharing.
Thanks alon. Good luck on your quest as well. It always makes it so much more fun hunting when you have the confidence of knowing that seated coins have come from the spot before. At least you know there is a chance

Wow Bryce ! What a year you've had . It really is amazing that you can go right over ground

that you know you have hit before and get a signal. I completely share your joy of being out

with the headphones on for many hours at a time , cruising for a deepie. Thanks for being the

inspiration to so many of us newbies that you are ( and i suspect to many a grizzled veteran).

Also thanks for the informative PM recently- yeah if do get an SE or E-trac , Ill definitely have

questions for you. One question now , what kind of digger are you rescuing those deepies

with ? Thanks Amigo ! Argentium.
Thanks...and it has been a whirlwind of a year. I'm using a standard Lesche digger...and that's about the only digger I prefer. It also has a serrated edge to help gnaw through roots if need be. If I've honestly helped you in any way via my posts...pm's etc...I am thrilled to have done so. Take care...and let me know if you ever have any questions.

Wow great story and great stuff.

I only wish I could find about half the amount of good stuff that you find!!!!!
Thanks bro. These parks I've hit the last few weeks are very stingy. No wheaties...mercs...or roosies cause' they've been pounded so much. There is still some good old stuff right at the brink of detecting depth though...or hidin' in the trash.

Wow, Great story. This year has also been my best to date, I only found one seated coin, but it turned out to be a half dollar. Just the other day I also tried to wheather the cold and get a few signals in, but didnt find anything. But just getting out and helping your oun peace of mind is what its all about anyway.

congrts on your finds,

Pro-
Thanks Pro. I agree 100%...it's all about some peace and freedom. The coins dug are merely icing on the cake.

Re: After my last hunt...I KNEW there had to be a SEATED COIN hidin' in the iron

Nice job Bryce..as always, specially on that seated! . I know what you mean about the stress disappearing when the headphones go on.It's the best way, next to running, that I've ever found to just tune out the rest of the world and feel the days stress and tension melt away..

very nice finds, yes putting on the headphones when your looking for oldies seems to take you back in time, and i always have to wonder how long it has been since a coin saw daylight.
and who held it last.
keep up the good work and happy holidays to you and all.

WTG Bryce. I thought you gave up the last hunt?? A warming spell starts Sat. here. Will be 52 by Mon. Hope it heads your way too. HH and Happy holidays and the best for you next year. I know you have been through a lot in 08. God Bless Ron :icon_sunny:
Thanks CJH. I thought so too...but the ground is still cooperating and hasn't decided to completely freeze yet. Once you get past the first 2"...it's okay. That won't last long though ;D I am still hopefull of at least one more hunt.

Thanks Jerry. I couldn't agree with you more  I use jogging and weightlifting as well as detecting. Detecting brings me the peace I need though.

Thanks Dave. Merry Christmas to you to my friend. I think you'll like the sef coil

Nice finds but even more rewarding is reading your great post.I am Ohio Jerry's brother Bill and I also have an SE. Just learning how to use it so far but you mentioned a 10 -12 coil? Is that a larger coil that is a bit more capable than the stock coil? From reading your posts I am convinced that you are most certainly one of the leading experts in the field on the capabilities of the SE.Looking foward to your next posts.
Hi Willy. Thanks for the kind words....and nice to meet 'ya. The 10 x 12 S.E.F. is an aftermarket coil...and I absolutely love it. If you have the SE...and it has the newer pro coil on it...that's a great coil too. If you have an SE that has the slimline coil on it though...I would definately recommend trying either the 10 x 12 SEF coil or the newer minelab pro coil. Take care

Congratulations on your seated and the token is neat.
I like them all. Nice hunt.
I just might have to head down that way next year
to see if you missed anything!!
Thanks R.D. Nobody gets it all. At least I don't anyway ;D

Re: After my last hunt...I KNEW there had to be a SEATED COIN hidin' in the iron

That's a GREAT day of hitting the frozen turf Bryce! Looks like you've got some diamonds there, miner's cut perhaps? Just beautiful man! The silver you wanted and an awesome looking token to boot! Congrats on a great year and may you get another chance to top it off soon!

Re: After my last hunt...I KNEW there had to be a SEATED COIN hidin' in the iron

I pity the poor metal detecting fools who pass through your area in 30 years or so. I'm sure there will be nothing left to dig. You are an amazing DEEP coin detectorist muchacho. There isn't any better. That thumbtack thing looks like it has a propeller on it so it probably relates to early aviation activities. Keep going Bryce. As long as you can dig you can also detect. :icon_king:

Congrats on the great silver finds, Bryce!
Do you think that your "tie-dyed" shirt had anything to do with your finds?
If so, I want to get one. Hope your season lasts a little longer and continued success.

Yep Bryce, you just keep mumbling to yourself out there in the cold...Just mumble about a gold coin and I am sure there will be one for you. You are kicking some serious butt out there. Just another day in the life of a great detectorist! Nice job buddy, but don't get frostbite out there..WTG...... jgas P.S. I think Mom had something to do with that seated lady!
