After my last hunt...I KNEW there had to be a SEATED COIN hidin' in the iron

Well I told myself after my last hunt; that finding 3 Barber dimes and 2 injuns was a perfect way to end the season. However...there was also this little nagging voice in the back of my stubborn, buzzed head that kept saying..."You know there had to be some seated coins in that park you putz". ;D

Needless to say...I ventured out into the cold to see if I could "hustle" up another coin or two from this old beat up park that gave up the 3 Barbers and 2 injuns last week. Don't get me wrong...I was...and am 100% satisfied with my hunting season this year. :) The problem is..and it isn't really a problem...is that I love this hobby and the joy it brings me. :icon_sunny: It is a challenge each and every time I go to one of these pounded parks ...to pop out one more deepie that someone walked over....including me. It is also a pleasure as much as it is a challenge...because of the way it absolutely chases the depression or stress away. :angel7: It truly disappears as soon as the headphones go on. This hobby is PRICELESS...and is absolutely in my blood for life. :icon_cheers:

I truly don't think there is anything left in this park at depths of anything less than 8"...unless it's hidin' in heavy trash. On a good day...I might get one or two signals per hour to investigate. On a bad day...well the pouch is void of anything other than a couple tiny pieces of wire...and maybe a few rusty nails. ;D When I can bring myself to take off the S.E.F coil for a few minutes...I'll pop on the 6" Excelerator and see if I can't pull another deepie or 2 hidin' in the dense trash...but the 10 x 12 isn't coming off anytime soon. :headbang: It just continues to amaze me every time out...and just seems to hit an older layer of goodies left in the ground by others..including myself ...using other coils. :icon_thumleft: I know for a fact this park has been...and IS "explored" on a regular basis...because they were the ones who tipped me off to some activity here around the turn of the century. :occasion14:

After a short while I ended up right back near the big tree where 2 of the 3 barbers came from last time. I got a deep injun right off the bat...and the blood was now flowin'. 8)

About 15 minutes later I got that sweet faint warble I was hoping for...and it repeated fairly well. It was a real faint sound and I would have liked to have seen the depth meter...but seeing the screen at this time of day is absolutely impossible. ??? What time of day you ask??....almost ANY time of day? :D It just drives me nuts :tard: ...but it has also made me more in tune with the SE...since I can't ever see the screen and must hunt pretty much by sound alone.

Anyway I dug a nice plug down to 9" and it was like rusty sand at the bottom. Almost like a big chunk of iron had dissolved and faded away into the soil....and there was also a piece of an old rusty bolt there as well. ??? I ran the probe and it sang  ....so I snatched up a little clod and pinched it. Out popped a rusty THIN slug. I turned it over though...and saw the glimmer of silver peeking through. :angel8: :blob5: I could barely see a wreath through the rust...so right then I knew I had one more Barber from this site. I carefully stuck it in my pouch next to the injun and plugged away.

About 30 minutes later I got a deep token and then came accross another injun/token type of hit...and it sounded DEEP. After finally having the moon...stars...sun...clouds...etc...lined up just right...I was FINALLY able to see the depth meter ;D ...and it was buried. I dug down 10" and popped out an old stick pin/brooch...but it looked like a big, piece of junk encased in crusty dirt :-\ ....so I just stuck it in my pouch. 8)Little did I know that when I cleaned it later...it would turn out absolutely beautiful....and was sterling silver. :sunny:

I plugged along for a short time longer and popped out a tax token and one more injun. By now I could barely feel the ends of my toes... the ends of my fingers... had stuff frozen to my face....and began to mumble to myself. It was time to leave...before they found me frozen stiff :D ...with my right hand still knotted in a clench around the SE ;D

I got back to the car and pulled my few goodies out of the pouch to see what I ended up with.
I picked up the silver dime and put on my glasses to try and see through the rust covered front. My heart skipped a beat when I thought I saw a glimmer of a seated lady peeking through. :blob7:  If I held it just right...I thought we could make out the outline right above where the date should be.

Once I got home I started to try and get the crud off the coin to see what I had. I worked over 2 hours on this coin trying to get the rust off of it. ??? In all my years of detecting...I've never had a silver coin this hard to get clean. 8) ::) Finally...after a ton of baking soda...a ton of lemon juice.....and a sore finger and thumb from rubbing ;D ...an 1877 Seated Lady peeked through the crud. YIPPEE. :D :icon_sunny: Glad I listened to the nagging voice in my head that told me to go hunting today. :angel7:

My take for the 2 hours...some peace and solace...an 1877 Seated dime...2 more injuns'..a tax token...and the absolutely beautiful Silver stick pin/brooch.
I also found a tiny little piece down over 8" that is the size of a thumbtack head. It is in a pic by itself and looks like it has some lettering on it and was also enameled at one time. I have no clue what it is. If anyone can make something out...please let me know.

This has been an amazing year for me...and this hobby has gotten me through some very tough times. Thanks for sharing this with me...and good luck on your next hunt. :angel7:

Super nice finds. I really like the token. I ordered Andy Sabisch's new book.
Dman
Thanks D. There's some good info in that book. I always like to compare settings and see what works for others too. Everybody has different things that work...so it's fun to give some different stuff a shot.

Congrats on the great silver finds, Bryce!
Do you think that your "tie-dyed" shirt had anything to do with your finds?
If so, I want to get one. Hope your season lasts a little longer and continued success.
Gold Nuggets :icon_jokercolor:
Thanks G.N. I'd say...definately get a tie-dyed shirt ;D I hope the ground doesn't freeze for another couple of weeks.

I pity the poor metal detecting fools who pass through your area in 30 years or so. I'm sure there will be nothing left to dig. You are an amazing DEEP coin detectorist muchacho. There isn't any better. That thumbtack thing looks like it has a propeller on it so it probably relates to early aviation activities. Keep going Bryce. As long as you can dig you can also detect. :icon_king:
Chris
;D Thanks for the kind words my friend. I'm gonna' keep pluggin' til the ground doesn't allow it. Thanks for the possible ID of the little pin. No one else has responded about it...so I'll just have to call it an aviator item of some kind  Take care bro

Thanks lowbatts. I hope they are real diamonds...but I won't know for some time as I don't have a tester right now. Take care

Nice going saving that seated coin from the ground. It's been a long time since I have been on tnet. I'm glad you are still doing your thing. Have a good holiday this year.

Re: After my last hunt...I KNEW there had to be a SEATED COIN hidin' in the iron

Way to go Buddy. Not only, have you had a great detecting year but you have learned the secret to this hobby. We have both had a stressful year but the you can escape the real world for short periods of time with the help of your detector. If you focus really hard you slip into the world of "sound only" you listen hard for that special sound and focus on your target. We know that we have to come back but the time in the field is priceless. GOOD DIGS

Why aren't I surprised - you wringing out the rusty earth and having a silver coin pop out? Nice!!

Well Bryce, you did it again! A bunch of great finds!

Thanks for taking us along on your hunts, and continued HH in the future!! ;D

Oh, what's the deepest that you've found coins with that 6" coil? I have one but I don't use it too often.

Thanks Neil. I hope the ground doesn't freeze for at least another week or so.
As for that 6" Excelerator coil...I run it hot..at 32 semi-auto sensitivity...and I found silver and injuns at 8" often...and even found some as deep as 9". Take care buddy
