Detector(s) used
Minelab explorer se. Whites trx pinpointer
Primary Interest:
All Treasure Hunting
ok I'm a newbie to md . My problem is every time I get a good signal( let's say 00ferrous 29 conductive air test says silver quarter )that shows halfway or deeper on my minelab explorer se depth meter I dig and dig and dig and never find anything and lose the signal altogether. any help would be greatly appreciated

Do you use a pinpointer? Sometimes it happens to me with AT PRO because I'm slightly off on centering.

Yes sir I have a pointer I've dug holes big enough to bury a 5 gallon bucket several time nothing there and never get the signal again

I hope a Minelab explorer user chimes in because something is wrong. Maybe the settings or GB ?

Try turning down the sensitivity a ways ....sounds like falseing to me .

Hello Woodrat,

I hope this will help you.

1. Always noise cancel at the beginning of your hunt, then do it periodically while hunting. I usually do it every 25 – 40 minutes, also if you move into a different soil type or moister conditions.
2. You may have the sensitivity too high for the conditions.
3. Try moving around the target from different angles – signal should be repeatable (in most cases).
4. Low and Slow sweep speed
5. Operate with a threshold of your liking.
6. Scrub the ground with the coil using # 4 above

How does it sound in All Metal? I have dug a few FE-CO numbers like you and it turned out to be iron (bleed over) - fooled me, but not often.

I have found very small bird shot pellets that were difficult to locate in the hole, even with a pin pointer, just a thought.

Regards,

Thanks everyone I sure hope this helps

That's great advise professor. I use a explorer se pro daily and thats exactly what to do. The only other thing I could think of is reset factory settings and hope a bug pops out.

I am using the factory settings. I don't know about ready to give up all I find is bottle caps and pulltabs

I've also seen shallow shallow thumb tacks give a deep coin signal dig plug and can't find target because it's on plug and sounds bad after digging.

No need to give up......You have to suffer thru the pulltabs and bottle caps. The good stuff will come along it takes time and practice knowing all the features of your machine and which ones to use where. After all that you will likely still dig alot of junk you dont want but the things you dig that you do want make it all worthwhile.

The first thing I did when I bought my Explorer was create a coin garden. Bury some coins. I learned a lot in less than 15 minutes, then went out and dug silvers that day.

Listen,

You said it yourself that you are new to metal detecting. There is NO replacement for experience. The Explorer is not a "turn-on-and-go" metal detector. If you want that, get an Ace 250. They are cheap and work okay for what they are designed to do. What you have is a real metal detector that has a learning curve. Take your time and get to know it well.

I agree 100% that you are probably experiencing falsing due to your sensitivity being set too high for the ground you are in. You really also want to occasionally check your coil cover. You get a tiny piece of wire or something in there, and you will get all kinds of signals that you can never find when you dig (thats also a neat trick to play on a friend).

Best of luck - Mike

You will dig trash. You dig lots of trash. Get used to it, it's part of the game.

Thanks guys found a buck 34 in change today no silver but I did get an old wheat thanks again

PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!

Use it every chance you get. Every time you turn on your Explorer, it is talking to you. Every detector speaks a different language. The more comfortable you get with your detector, the easier it will be for you to understand what it is trying to tell you. You will eventually get to a point where settings will be second nature to change, and you will be fluent in your Explorer's Language. Once you get there, you will have a TON of fun with it. Just get past the learning curve.
