An Afternoon Of Unexpected Finds - One's ALIVE

Hi all,

I passed by a church soccer field yesterday and had my detector in the car, so I decided to check it out for a while..I found about $6 in clad, and also came across a coin that I thought was a silver quarter (even though my detector read it as a penny-dime signal). And in a church field too! Hmmmmmm..

Before I left I thought to myself, "One more quarter.." About 10 minutes later I found 2 next to each other. On my way to the truck, I was swinging the coil between the black top area and a small playground..I got a signal that turned out to be a silver ring.

Now for the biggest shock of all..I knew I was close to a school I hadn't been to in quite a while..it didn't have much of a field, but it did have a playground. I almost didn't go because I was tired after a couple of hours at the church, but I thought maybe I could check the wood chips..

It was a good thing I went there. As I walked to the back of the school (which was not visible from anywhere in the parking lot) I went down a small grade and noticed a dog at the bottom, totally out of view in a secluded area of the field. As I got closer to it, I noticed it was tied to a backstop post with about 1 foot of leash.

As I came closer it sat up and showed its teeth, so I started talking to it and held my hand out slowly. As I did, it began to whine and then lick my hand. I untied the leash and noticed the dog was malnourished and dehydrated. I decided I had to do something, so I ended up taking it home. It was afraid to get in my truck and afraid to come out, so I had to carry her in and out. She would flinch and duck down to the floor if I held my hands up, so more than likely it had been abused. How anyone could do this to an animal I'll never know. There's better ways to get rid of a dog than leaving it for dead tied up to a post, far away from where anyone could see it.

We found out she was female of a mixed breed..she has some Lab features, but I'm not sure what other breed is in there..she's all white with short, light gold ears and a little color along her back side and tail.

We got her home, fed her and gave her some water (needless to say she ate and drank like crazy). Then I gave her a good bath (she smelled like urine) and later introduced her to my other dogs (a Dachshund and a black Lab mix). Luckily they all got along exceptionally well. I guess we'll keep her, but it looks like all my clad from now on will go to the vet rather than another guitar :D

Anyway, here's some pics of her (that's me with her in the last photo). The first one is a little disturbing (seeing how skinny she is) but the others are cute..the techs at the animal hospital could feel all of her ribs, and every vertibrae and bone in her back and pelvic area. Her teeth, ears and paws all looked good. With proper care she should be okay and gain her weight back..it may take a bit longer to get her to trust people again but we're working on it.

Man I am so MAD at the treatment of the dog!!!! I like animals more than I like people. I'm glad you found her, one minute she is left for dead, then the next minute she has a new lease on life!!! I hope you find a platinum ring for your troubles!!!

Now that's a banner find!

Re: An Afternoon Of Unexpected Finds - One's ALIVE

sad that a person would do that to a helpless animal -- good that you did what you did for her --- now just teach her to dig the holes for you on command * and you got it made---seems like she likes you already -- animals aren't as dumb as some folks think they are .

Re: An Afternoon Of Unexpected Finds - One's ALIVE

You did a good thing with the dog there. I hope she turns out to be a great addition to your household. I can't figure how some people can live with themselves after that kind of abuse. You get mega respect from Zeus.

Re: An Afternoon Of Unexpected Finds - One's ALIVE

Natman, your a good man for doing the right thing with the dog.. and Im with you.. how people can just abandon a dog like that is just criminal and they should be tossed in jail for a while.. or better yet, handcuffed to a backdrop for a few hot days without food or water ( yeh,I know it sounds harse, but Im a dog man.. and just don't tolerate that crap)

Re: An Afternoon Of Unexpected Finds - One's ALIVE

Natman, What a stand-up and commendable thing to do! :icon_king: May you be rewarded many times over for your kindness. Congrats on ALL your finds!!

Re: An Afternoon Of Unexpected Finds - One's ALIVE

sad they would dump them like that at all but to tie her up with no water or food far away from sight to just starve to death man thats cold -- I mean at least let her loose for petes sake--- if your going to kill something do it and be done with it but to make them suffer like that is just plain cruel and twisted -- as a hunter I would not gut shoot a deer to make it die slowly --a fast clean shot --bang its over with -- to make things suffer and enjoy it is the sign of a sick mind and a twisted evil soul-- you were a good man god bless.

Thanks for asking, she's doing really well..they think she's about 8 months old and all she wants to do is play..my Lab mix will be 3 in November and is still getting used to her in the yard..she can get carried away with being playful and the other dog sometimes doesn't like it too much :D They're still in the process of getting used to each other but it's coming along.

She got all her shots yesterday, and we already made an appointment to have her spayed at the end of the month. The docs at the clinics loved her and think she's a really sweet dog.

I'm a deer hunter also, and you're right, if you don't have a clean shot you shouldn't take a chance and shoot anyway..the animal could end up crippled or injured beyond repair, only to suffer for who knows how long.

The dog wasn't bitten up by bugs and its ears were clean..I'm thinking it was starved (the vets say for about 3 weeks) before it was left there..doesn't make any sense to me.

Thank you all for your replies and stories, I enjoyed ALL of them!

Re: An Afternoon Of Unexpected Finds - One's ALIVE

Hey Natman....Sweet dog and great job on the rescue. We live in the boonies and it's a dump ground for dogs for some reason. There are shelters all around here and we have taken found dogs there and they do get adopted out. We follow the adoptions online to make sure. We kept a 5-6 week old pup that had scrapes/cuts from what we think was caused by being thrown out of a car window while moving. She's about 2 years old now and the best dog we've ever owned. She repays us every day with her loving and the comical things she does. Anyway great job

Re: An Afternoon Of Unexpected Finds - One's ALIVE

Natman,

That is an awesome thing that you did. She realizes what kind of a person you are and she will be your best buddy now. I heard a saying a long time ago and have never forgotten it. It goes like this:
If you take a dog who is starving and feed him till he prospers, he will not bite you. That is the principle difference between man and dog.

She is a cutie and you will be rewarded many times over for your great act.

Re: An Afternoon Of Unexpected Finds - One's ALIVE

Congrats! on the silver & from the sound of it you definitely did the right thing by bringing the pup home.
Beautiful looking dog. I'm sure it won't take her long to realize she got a good home now...
Continued Good luck, & Happy hunting~

Re: An Afternoon Of Unexpected Finds - One's ALIVE

Nice work you did! I think you will have a PAL with that dog.

When I was working I'd take a commuter train to work. One day a poor pooch, obviously malnourished and dirty, was walking around almost in the path of the trains. I got his attention and he followed me to my car. As I opened the passenger door he jumped right in. Then when I sat down he put his head in my lap and was shivering for the entire 20 minute ride home. I fed and washed him and my boys (9 and 4 at the time) were DELIGHTED. Unfortunately my wife' allergies prevented us from keeping him but a neighbor was thrilled to get him. He tried to find an owner without success and was happy to keep him.

What a wonderful thing to do. She is sure lucky that you came along when you did.
You are "good people" in my book.
I run a parrot sanctuary and rescue how some people can treat animals is sickening.
I see it first hand here when I get those special ones that arrive here all I can think
to wonder is. Why?

Oh and p.s. nice finds you got there.

Re: An Afternoon Of Unexpected Finds - One's ALIVE

Nat,

Looks like this one found you.
These kind turn out to be the best ones.
Getting her to trust people will happen more easily than you think.
Dogs tend to mirror the personalities of their owner.

I had one find me in February,
She is the "Freeloader" Her name is Saasha

In the picture she is 4 months old.
She is 10 months now and she is my dog.
After running away from where she lived before...
she has never offered to leave here,
and we work with the gates open.

Congrats on your new family member.
Thanks for showing this one your heart.
She will be fine.
and you have a hat full of Karma added onto your total !

Thom

Re: An Afternoon Of Unexpected Finds - One's ALIVE

Nat you are the MAN!!! She will repay you with love ten fold. I hope you find something really nice for your efforts. Glad to hear that she is doing well. Did the Vets check to see if she has a microchip under her skin? Most dogs these days have them if she was bought or bred. However, she may not have one. If she did you could trace her back to a former owner as they may be the one that left her there to die. Starved for three weeks, she did well just to survive. Anyway you have a heart of Gold and I hope you find more Gold in return. Compliments to your wife for taking her into your family also.

Best Wishes and Happ Hunting,
Roy
