I "found" some in Colorado, I was deer hunting new country when I saw a good looking spot....kind of a natural funnel in the terrain with some rocks to conceal myself. Walking through the rocks, I noticed the ancient doodling, the one I remember was an Elk antler with a hand reaching out for it.

I have collected arrowheads and relics all my life, often wondering what it would be like to live then, or even talk to prehistoric man.....here he was clearly telling me "here is a good place to ambush elk". Very cool. Wish I had a camera.

Very interesting. Yes, I've recorded petroglyphs in RI. Some of my research was published in a book on petroglyphs of the Northeast woodlands. Nowhere near this old though! Always interested me, allows a view into the mind of the folks who made them, even if we can't figure out what they were thinking all the time. Interestingly, many similar petroglyph motifs are found though out the world.

Dating oldest known petroglyphs in North America

http://phys.org/news/2013-08-date-oldest-petroglyphs-north-america.html

notice the "cupules" covering one of the rocks on the right side. Very interesting, cupules are found on petroglyph panels in many places around the globe...

Cupules around the globe:

http://www.visual-arts-cork.com/prehistoric/cupules.htm

"Indeed, the oldest art on every populated continent consists of linear grooves and cupules. It dates from as early as the Lower Paleolithic era, and therefore pre-dates the more celebrated Gravettian and Magdalenian cave painting by hundreds of millennia."

Another excellent study:

Fascinating that the oldest rock art found in NA includes a panel covered in cupules.

Cupules from the Columbia River:

CultureWatch Northwest: Cupules on the Columbia

Did Paleolithic arrivals from Asia bring the tradition of cupules here? Seems very likely. And, if the date of 14,800 years ago is in play it may have been created by the Western point tradition people who were here perhaps prior to Clovis. Photo is from the Columbia River....
