Where was it found, creek, field, dug up ? Might help someone else, hard to tell from the picture and I'm sure I wouldn't be able to identify if a geologist couldn't. Is it possible it could have been transported from some other place ?

Looks like limestone to me- with color variance due to mineral/iron seepage. But that's just a guess. What county? or region? Yakker

It was found in a gully, but there was about a pickup truck load of it, small medium and large pieces. The veins in the rock appear to be quartz. The location is western NC Piedmont, about 45 minutes west of Charlotte.

Looks like a big outcrop of Limestone or Qurtzite small grain type/ Sandstone.

Limestone is quite possible, a test with an acid would help. Even vinegar should cause a fizzling reaction if limestone.

It looks to me like you have a porous example of quartz just before it would have become massive quartz had the solution that deposited it not been interrupted. The solid layers would have eventually expanded thru out the vein and the web like structures filled in. The open spaces in the webbing are probably full of microcrystalline quartz so they will be grainy and easily broken. My thoughts. I've seen many examples of this type of formation and its similar to limestone formation however its a silicate formation where as limestones are carbonates.
