If it were possible to read what's on the banner below the shield it would likely solve it quickly.

Kind of a German looking coat of arms, eastern Europe coat of arms. :dontknow: Just a swag, on account of the birds on it. I really
have no idea.

Hey DetectorMike, The artwork appears to be a family heritage crest/shield. Using high powered magnification, you will have to determine what head is on top, i.e., dog, eagle, griffin, dragon, etc... and like benz said earlier, really try to get the words off of the banner under the shield. Confirm what kind of birds are on the shield, eagle, hawk, raven, etc...based on the eagle on the top rim, I would say they are also eagles. Do you have any history on ownership (surnames) of the property where you found it? It may help you narrow down the family name using that crest. Best of luck, that is a great find, Sub 8-)

ok...i believe it is a us army mess mug...or beer mug...how ever one wishes to call it...a mantle place decoration.

the medallion is a us army unit crest...50 pages of those things an i can not find the one on the mug...
Badges - Awards & Decorations

it could be a retired or disbanded unit...
the federal shield, and the american eagle are the give away for being an american piece.
can you post the bottom of the mug? are there identifiers there?
