I first had that at a deli in Alachua, Florida around 1991. The place was near by where I was working and I'd had it a few times after that during lunch, because it was pretty good. Not a dish you see around here. Must be a Jonny Reb kinda of grub.Turnip greens and ham hocks. Good eatin'.
More Reb than Jonny I think. My Grandparents hand a pretty large garden, so it was nothing to walk through the garden and pick a nice ripe tomato, or pull up a nice turnip and chow down. When you grow up during a time when snacks were few and far in-between, you made hay out of what you had.I first had that at a deli in Alachua, Florida around 1991. And long before, and after, Jhonny Rebs.I first had that at a deli in Alachua, Florida around 1991. The place was near by where I was working and I'd had it a few times after that during lunch, because it was pretty good. Not a dish you see around here. Must be a Jonny Reb kinda of grub.
👍Love em. I’ll be planting around mid August for sure. I’m hesitant to plant in 90 degree weather.I enjoy them in beef stew, just like mom used to make. Can't say I'll enjoy any of the greens due to bug damage.
That was when people grew their own food and didn't rely on Government handouts and family and neighbor took care of each other. Then Roosevelt became president and decided it would be easier to help and ultimately control people if they were moved from the rural country areas and into cities. My father grew them in Minnesota, everyone had a garden plot and grew them. He was born in 1911.
Having a garden was pretty much an essential activity for the folks of that generation. In the rural areas, just about everyone had a garden and those close to the big cities sold to the urban folks as street vendors from a cart. Canning and having a root cellar was pretty common in those times. Now days we have Sam's Club, Costco and 7-11 for those on the go. Me and my wife get three meals a week from Hello-Fresh dropped off right on the front porch. They supply really good meals and incude just enough of all the ingredients needed. That way you don't run to the store for things like full packaged panko, spices, sour cream and so many other ingredients that'll just sit for weeks in the cupboard and fridge that'll eventually get old and tossed out. For dinner last night I made Lemony Spaghetti W/Brussels Sprouts. Pretty darn good it was 😋My father grew them in Minnesota, everyone had a garden plot and grew them. He was born in 1911.
Hey... I like poke greens!'That's about all they had to eat, but they did alright'. (We ate polk salad a lot too.)
