Anybody ever get a bad feeling detecting ALONE?

when it happens to me I always think about frontiersman and Indians that used to go through forests of the old growth trees that were all over hundred feet tall,, so dark even in daylight you couldn't see 50 feet! Dark knomes, evil ferries, wolves, black panthers, and bears! LOL!!! but I do keep a vigil on my surroundings in the woods! today there are cougars, and bears especially in the spring and all through the summer to watch for! every time I dig in the woods I look all around before kneeling down and making an easy target for some hungry animal!!!!

I've had that happen one time that I can recall. I was detecting at a very secluded organizational campground in the late fall after it was closed. Well I was down on my knees hunched into that ball shape trying to recover what turned out to be a 1940's Canadian penny. As I was grabbing the pinpointer all of a sudden my hair went up on my neck and I had a sense of imminent danger. That caused me to straighten up on my knees, I pulled my headphones off and heard some crunching of leaves and twigs behind me. I turned and some dude that was about 90 feet from me and walking towards me, while carrying a large stick, looked like a club not a walking stick. At that point I stood up to reveal my giant size..I'm almost 7 foot and the size of refrigerator Perry. That and l had my lesche in hand which caused a awkward moment. The guy stopped dead in his tracks, he stared at me about 12 seconds, I was glaring at him. Guy turned around and walked back into the woods from where he came.
I thought about following him, but decided against it. I stayed detecting that day for several more hours but just kept a good eye trained on the woods that surrounded that location.

You're a big'un! You should give up detecting and get into bear wrestling. :laughing7:

I think part of the vibe is being vulnerable on the ground digging.

It happens; but, I carry a metal box full of firecrackers, so I don't worry to much.

I only feel like I am being watched if I am detecting close to home. My community is small and tightly-knit. Hey, they are tightly-wound as well. Hahha! Only 600 population. I live in the central part of NH and many many people here have never even been to Boston outside of an 8th grade class trip. Can you believe that? Even more of them have never been to the coast, and its only 1.5 hrs away. They are so "local" they barely can understand the concept of a big world out there, ready to explore, let alone understand what I am doing swinging a detector around an old cellar hole 30 feet from the edge of the road.

Lot of rubberneckin' going on here. I am the type of guy who always has a new project going. If I get a new boat, they all know. If I get a new tractor, they all know. Last summer, I made a nice smoker out of an old oil tank. I live on an old country road, so not much traffic, but EVERY single one who drives by is checking out everything. I'm not paranoid, just observant. I really couldn't care less if they get a crik in their necks eyeballing me.

So yeah, I feel like I am watched when I am detecting close to my neck-o'-woods.

Heh well... this has happened to me many times through the years...
The one that scared that absolute crap outta of me was in a park...
I was on a rural stretch of beach...
no one around for a mile...
I am digging a signal... one one knee... I pick it up... stand up and turn around...to look for my girl...
Friggin park ranger was standing right behind me watching me...
I nearly jumped 2 feet ... and had dropped my detector and raised my scoop in defense
holy crap my heart jumped outta my chest...Friggin got the drop on me...
I was like "jeezez man wtf... why would you do that"...
He was like ... "I was just curious what you were finding"...
Over time I would see this guy... weirdo...
Girls go topless out there... I kinda got that he hides in woods or some crap...
was creeper and CREEPY...
BUT... from then on...
I ALWAYS am looking behind me.

I would have lodged a complaint with his superiors.

AARC where is that beach;)

I had an incident at a local school I've been to many times. Wasn't finding much in front so went out back to the football field. I was detecting along and kept hearing this weird noise. I looked around and didn't see anything. It happened several more times and at this point I took off my headphones to listen, and didn't hear anything. Couple minutes later I get a nice signal near the 50 yard line, bend down and start my plug and I hear a whoosh and feel the breeze on my back. This time I stood up, took the headphones off and really looked around. After a minute or two, I heard the noise again and looked up. There was an eagle circling the field above me. I looked around and on the field lights was a new nest, with mama and a youngster. Guess I got a little to close to his territory for his comfort, so I went back to the front. I didn't need another warning from him to get the point.

Dang. Too far away.

only places I can say I truly felt uneasy was when I had the permit for
Mining land, ghost Towns.

My Buddy & I were hunting The One on the Left I believe.

And this Pit bull showed up.
My hunting buddy had a bad experience with a dog in the Past so he went to his truck & sat, .
Me being stubborn as I am, I decided the dog wasn't going to run me off.
though every time I got down to dig, I had to hold my Head up & back
Because it tried to lick or sniff my Nose everytime I got down to dig :(
I have this aversion to domestic animals, Especially Dog Hair & saliva.
I'd rather have to sleep around spiders,

crack heads

or Mexican Banditos.

Anyway. the back of the house was missing 90% of the back Wall
and I walked towards it to detect along the edge & the pit bull got between the house & Me
and Growled for the first time. so I turned sideways still detecting & Then tried to
head towards the house again & the dog again interceded and looked like it really didn't want me to
go in. and would attack if i pushed it. Whether it was protecting something inside or Protecting me from falling through , i don't know.
But I Felt uneasy.
So I hunted a little more & headed for my JIMMY. the Gate was down in the Back & as soon as I got their
The Dog jumped in :( so I had to pretend to go back across the road to get it out & Close my gate quick

The Other was

I was hunting it alone, & Shortly after getting to it,
I Scared a Squirrel or Something that was in the top Floor.
& because it Moved Fast with a Big Thump, It woke me up :laughing7:

other then those, I don't remember anything except corner of the eye Things which
can be anything from Bugs to Leaves.
sort of Like "Party Favors"

This is why my 4" 440C spyderco and my Sig p238 with +P ammo always comes along for a nice day of detecting. One just never knows, usually these fears are instinctual and should be listened to. There is still much we are learning about the science of the human sensory system and the different stimuli which trigger our senses.

There are a couple different feelings that I have experienced. The first is the regular feeling that I am being watched which is kind of creepy and depending on how much it bothers me I'll either leave or continue about my business. The other is a stronger unsettling feeling of impending doom, I hate to say the word ghostly but that's what it is. That's not a good feeling and could just be mental but the fact that it comes on so strong and has happened repeatedly in the same areas makes me think it's something.
I've started to bring my dog with me when I go into places like that but the creepy thing is that I can tell he senses something too. I'm not saying that I believe in ghosts but I do think some places have some type of presence from something that may have happened in the past.

A Rottweiler and a 357 always helps to ease the mind.

Although its likely nothing, its best to trust your first instinct in these situations and get out !!

Keep @ it and HH !! :hello2:

Might have been the spirits watching you.I'll catch that feeling I just can't shake sometimes.Usually in the dark pines.Ever had that feeling and then flush up a flock of turkeys that are roosting for the evening?,it can tickle someones heart with butterflies:o

I always have a Springfield .45 and the Lord with me... but I still get skeered of the big ol boogey man! :laughing7:

I typically hunt abandoned property lost to time in the woods and ALWAYS feels as if somebody is watching me... from inside the house!!! :icon_scratch: :dontknow:

I hunted an abandoned hospital/home/mansion that is rumored to be haunted, I felt creeped out a little but some of these old places I hunt in the woods get my skin crawling.

I figure anything that my .45 or the Lord can't handle is gonna get me anyway! Lol but I really am considering buying my brother a AT Pro just so I have a hunting partner. I figure some company will help cut down on the creeps and increase the odds of locating more objects.
