🔎 UNIDENTIFIED Anyone know what this yellow rock is.

I find it around. This specimen is light and porous, I thought that meant igneous but I could be wrong. Sometimes stains the earth yellow. There is also black intrusions, could that be carbon? Sometimes I find the black intrusions, in a light rock, that I think is the same, but is mud stained from being so porous, I could be wrong.

I’m no geologist, but it almost looks like a rotten punky looking sugar quartz with iron stains. Someone clear up the proper name. Please? Maybe a Wizard of Geology?

The pictures I’ve seen of sandstone look similar, but I think there’s no sandstone around, im in upstate’s sc, in Clemson expiremental forest, on a road cut.

Also about decomposed granite, is it always kind of crumbly hence decomposed? I have a different grades of this rock, and where I live this yellow rock is hard like a rock and non porous, but as you dig deeper you’ll find more porous rock that have more of the yellow stuff in them.

A wizard told me the word is grus, but not sure about this item. I like to hold sample in hand.

So where I live the yellow rock is fine grained, so I think that rules out Grus. Another thing, this rock is most always found with black intrusions. But where I live it is also found with a fine grained white or gray rock. These form white streaks in red clay. They were digging by the road, and were bringing up coarser white chalky rock. At another vein (they are always in veins) the yellow rock faded into white frothy chalky rock. I should a picture to a geologist, and though she hadn’t seen gold like the rock I showed her, she had seen silver from Tennessee that was frothy white like a photo I had . She had worked at haile mine and In a lab.

That how I see it. Maybe some geo somewhere may have a name for it. I would only say it looks somewhat abrasive, with probably less compressive strength than quartzite if I was asked by some mine engineer, how the rockdrill bits I sold might drill into it.
