Armada chest??

I have bought this super heavy iron chest and want to know how old it is. and what type of chest it is.

Well... no it is not an "Armada" chest.... BUT... it is a really ... really... nice chest.
It is what is called a "Strongbox".
It would have held money / gold etc for transport. which could have been transported by ship and probably was at some times.
Also by carriage and buggy etc.
Age... 1800's era.
Very cool.

thank you very much. i love it very much also. paid 175 euro for it and it measures 50 cm wide 30 cm high and 25 cm deep

Yep it is a nice box and I would have bought it also IF I saw it first ! Do you mind if I ask you how much you paid for it ? Who knows I may come across one myself sometime ?

Definitely a piece of metal-craft built to last. Be neat to locate some period padlocks to add to it. I'm not with you Don on any altering restoration. Looks good and original to me, which it can only be once in all time.

For us non-metric Americans, the box is 20 inches wide 12 inches high and 10 inches deep.

I am all with you on not restoring it. The way it is, it tells a story and has has an interesting life. And yes i am now trying to find 19th century padlocks for it. Just imagin what would have been transported in it.

Yes... there is a chance it could be from the late 1700's ...1790's perhaps... but IMO i do not think so.

It is hard to date this "absolute" or even to pin it down to an exact date without some form of markings from a / the manufacturer... which suggests / signified to me it predates the 1900's no matter what.

The hasps shapes and general overall "look" squares me into my date thinking. AND... IF... i really wanted to be exact in pushing my opinion to a guess...
I would say 1850's.
But again... this is the "feel" i get from this.

I also think you should find some 19th century padlocks... and enjoy it... and when you are done enjoying it... sell it to me... for double what you paid... j/k

NO... restore nothing... it does not need it in the slightest... and would only devalue it.
The look it has is what makes this piece so killer.

You guys and restoring stuff.... aRRRG>!
It is not an old tool your gonna use for work ya know ... or a coca cola machine :P
