Armiture/Armature? Pat'd July 17, 1894

What is it?

PAT'd July 17, 1894 (No other markings anywhere on it)
When the arm is cranked it generates power and lights up the red/orange light on the other side.

Im not sure what application the indicator light is for.

May be what Schools had in the Science Class

I think BCH nailed it. If you google 5 magnet Telephone Magneto, you will get a lot of hits, and many of them have the same patent number. Here's a link with a bit of info;

The light was definitely added later, and probably for the reason Jeff suggested, science lab or project.
