I never said bout sellin coins I keep all my coins I find, any jewelry I find if it's any value I get rid of to help pay for my hobby. It's all in personal preference. I do it my way and you do it your way.
I AGREE!! PERSONAL PREFERENCE!! I SELL..........PERIOD! Every company that sells metal detectors tells you about "riches" that can be found from days gone by. That's why I bought mine. As you can see from my signature, I've done well, and I don't care who sees it. It's good advertisement for the detector hobby, and those who sell them. Then again, there are those on this site, who will frown upon that. For whatever reason, (jealousy mostly), they can neither find big $ stuff or sell it. (Crusader and a few others are an exception to this). I say....whatever makes you happy! With most of the money I have made, my families bills have been paid, and I took a nice vacation to Disney last year. Which would NEVER have happened without the sale of a couple items I found. Whether you keep your relics or coins is your decision. Looking forward to seeing them! Good Luck! "THE (one and only)....... HOGGE"

If it's returnable it should be returned, that goes without saying.:icon_scratch: (maybe in my country we have common decency, because if its on your land & its returnable, do it, if not its yours)
Equally if you find ANY object that could be returned to the rightful owner or family, then do it, NO BRAINER.

Now you wait just a minute. First, I hope you are not ignorant and think everyone in your country has the same ethics as you. Second, not everyone in this country agrees to everything posted in this thread. Keep race, religion, whereabouts, out of the topic. If you have a grudge handle it through private messaging.

I don't have a lot of experience metal detecting yet, however I do have a lot of experience living and dealing with people. Honesty, integrity, decency, and fair play will never go out of style! Be honest with yourself and others and you will never have to worry about what anyone thinks and you won't be ashamed of that fellow in the mirror! I hope you find a million dollar coin and the property owner says Keep it---I was impressed with your manners and your honesty! There are lot of people who would hide finds from property owners, but they can't hide their behavior from GOD!

PlugCutter-Thank you for joining!! You are the future of this hobby, people like you will carry this on long after us old fogies are long gone. If you simply approach a land owner and ask permission most will grant it to you. If they want to see every thing then show them, this might get you to further permission elsewhere and there trust. From my experience 99% will give you permission because you asked them and not want any thing in return. Thank you for being the next generation-Happy Hunting =ED PS-to the older generation promote the hobby preserve history

Plugcutter just do what your heart tells you, im sure you know by now whats right or wrong. Me personally I strongly believe in karma, always did the right thing and asked to hunt and showed All finds before I left, 98 percent of the time I was told just keep it with a smile from them. Doing the right thing isnt always easy but sure helps me sleep at night.

This is what is the reality. Many FEAR showing the finds because they THINK that it will be grabbed off them. Most people think its a dirty coin or piece of rubbish & if they ever saw it, they would not pick it up. If they have a real interest in History or a particular item, then why not give them the satifaction of sharing finds from THEIR land. I guess its easier for me to give stuff & I generally offer it whether they want it or not, because I only give away seconds, thirds, or fourths. It only bcomes a strain if I'm giving a 1 & only find, but sometimes that is what is needed to sweeten the relationship. Remember I go back to land over & over, many now for over 10 years. I can't do a hit & run from someones yard & nor would I want to.

hello I am 13 and ready to ask for permission to metal detect on private property. and I was wondering that if I find gold, silver, or plat is the home owner gonna try and take a part off it? Or should I before i start should I ask them if they have everlost any valuable iteams so I can help them find it, so I would get to keep the rest.

I just asked permission twice last week to do private yards and happy to say I'm batting 2 for 2. Here's the approach I used to get in: First of all be calm, don't look like your nervous or stutter. Just pretend you are talking to someone you know. After knocking on the door, good afternoon ma'am or sir. My name is "your first name" and my hobby is metal detecting. I was wondering if I could scan your yard with my metal detector? Last guy's response was "go ahead" (Simple as that, get right to to the point. That's it, don't mention anything about coins, jewelry, or sharing. If the owner strikes up a conversation, go ahead and feel him or her out, you will feel more comfortable, maybe they'll tell you some history about the place. Good luck.............Rich

My advice would be this; have a written form they can sign explaining how finds are dealt with. I'd keep it simple. If they know of an item (ie I lost a bracelet with a silver rose) and it's found, it's returned. All other items are divided equally, by a "one for you, one for me" with the owner getting first pick. But that's me.

Ive never used a flyer or a contract when asking an owner, but I do have another detector that I offer the land owner to use if he wishes. I find it best to look the owner in the eye when asking, let him glance you over and get a feel for what kind of guy you are... usually they just scratch thier head and say "oh, i dont see why not" you stated you want to detect a parking lot, your 13, theres many excuses you can use. tell him you collect state quarters and your trying to fill your folder, tell him the change you find goes towards a school field trip, but also offer to show everything you find. he`ll probably watch you for the first 20mins or so untill he gets bored so dont throw any pulltabs or bottle caps over your shoulder, bring a pouch and discard the garbage properly. As young as you are, honesty is the best habit for you to get familiar with in this hobby, and remember the good advise Cru and Rich said, one land owner can always lead to another.
Good Luck, and post what you find.

Might just be my aspergers kicking in here, but one minute you're suggesting he make up a reason, then telling him to practice honesty?

I figure is you ask permission that it goes with out saying that the land owner know you are doing what you do to find things to keep. If they ask you to see your finds when your done then so be it. If they have lost something that they would take that opportunity to ask you I lost such and such would you mind looking around this area while your hunting and see if you can find it. That's the way I would be if I were the land owner. Otherwise if I give you permission to hunt I would expect you to keep what you find otherwise I would tell you no!

I love how this thread has sprung back to life after dying more than 9 months ago. :laughing9:

That's because of us newbies. Or old trimmers coming back into the hobby? Lol

oh lighten up, its a 13yr old kid, im just trying help him get his foot in the door. maybe he has something else going on that hes saving up for, who knows. im just giving him ideas.

At the end of the day he has age on his side & is much more likely to get a free for all than an older guy, so lap it up whilst you can.

You have your thoughts and I have mine, people spend slot of money on the detectors and there out to get there money bsck from there finds, I know I am

"Ethics" is a good Word to use here, or be maybe "honesty". This is the way to act to get our hobby banned everywhere.

Why does everyone have to complicate this so much? In the area where I live, I just ask one question: "Would you care if I did a little metal detecting on your place?". Most folks around here, if they say yes, could care less to see your finds. They care more about whether you do a good job filling your holes. Often, they will volunteer information like, "There used to be an old house over there." or "There are rumors that the previous owner buried some money here somewhere.". If that's the case, I'll usually offer to show them if I find something that interesting.
Also, if the owner comes by and asks, "Find anything good?", I'll usually empty my pockets & show them. Otherwise, I don't go out of my way to show my finds unless they've asked me to beforehand.
I have one place where I've agreed to relinquish all of my finds (it's the property of the local historical society.) & I've been completely honest with them. Haven't really found anything valuable, but a few neat artifacts.
Just ask, be polite, and be thorough filling your holes. Easy as that. I wouldn't go shoving contracts in folks faces or start discussing sharing valuables, etc. It scares a lot of people off or makes them think you're in it for the money rather than the hobby.
Good luck!
