How do you go about doing this? Anyway I seem to think of it would either be rude or weird.

I've never directly asked to look at a teller tray. Most of the time I just take a peek from across the counter. I have had some tellers actually show them their tray to see if there was anything I wanted. I usually tell them I'm looking for anything old.

if i can see the tray and it has halves/large dollars, i'll ask for them... if i can't, i'll still ask, also ask if other tellers have any too..

I never Really ask to look through their tray. I just ask for any Halves and Large dollars, and then I add them to my dump pile. I have had a teller offer me to search the tray so from now on i'll just edge search any dimes quarters and halves.

I ask to go through them :) As long as there is no one in line. I use my 15 year old charm

When ever I see a solid edge I ask if it's Canadian and it's almost always is. But I did snipe a war nickel once.
