We were down in Michigan's lower peninsula today visiting a lakehouse we own. This place is located only about 15 miles from the 19th century ghost town of Deward (named after lumbering giant David Ward).

Eventually I decided to do a little detecting.

I picked a spot about 10 feet from where I had dug a cache of rare lumber era tokens a while back (sold for $100 each on ebay). I figured it would be useless because I had totally cleaned this area out using some of the deepest detectors made.

I only hunted about 3 minutes and my detector gave me a "go for it" signal. I figured it's another stinking zinc fruit jar lid.

Down I dug and nearly gave up, but suddenly there it was! another David Ward token!

I also picked up some trash which also surprised me. I had totally cleaned this area out...or so I thought.

Thanks much for looking!

great token,ya baby !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;D ;D ;D

Nice token Badger.

It's amazing how you can miss or not hear a item correctly.

I thought I had alot of area's pounded hard. I got a large coil and I'm finding silver dimes I missed before.

The coverage and added depth are a big plus.

Good luck

Jeremy

Hey Badge you only need one token. Just send that one to me I will even clean it. ;D ;D ;D Burdie

Nice find Badger. The pen is cool also.Ive detected Deward B4.Found a few relics (no tokens).
The fact that the whole town site has been dozed over kinda stinks....how much got buried out of reach?Did not know it was illegal to detect....whoops. Anyway, congrats...good job,,,Joe

way to go badge!! :o you must have been psyched to pull that one up! i love those old tokens . great stuff!

You bet! I'm still in disbelief!

You know it's so weird. I had made my mind up that that site was finished and now worthless. Man, I'm reminded once again that a site is never really hunted out.

Just when you least expect it ...WOW!

Thanks,

Badger

Hi Joe,

It wasn't illegal back a few years ago but just in the last couple years the powers that be pulled one over on the public. There are sites online where you can read all this stuff.

Basically, all state owned lands are closed to detecting unless posted as open. Very few are open and even then finds must be declared.

It's a real bummer. The archaeologists won this one big-time.

How common are tokens in Michigan? Seems like you have done well on finding them. They must not have used tokens here in Pa. as I have never found any in 34 years of digging.

Do you think you could send me one to get a closer look?

Tokens were heavily used in Michigan for many years. Most were small about the size of a nickel. Large ones like this token are very rare.

The valuable tokens are scarce and carry the name of some famous person or event.

My token is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. It may have a "book value" but that really means nothing. I've been watching ebay almost since it started and the Deward tokens I posted for sale last year are the only ones I've ever seen on ebay.

Most lumber era token collectors will never own a Dave Ward token. They're just not out there for sale at any price.

Ah 10-4 good buddy! Yes, the wheel in the tree was a post of mine way back last spring. I just can't believe it hasn't made it into the all-time great section yet! ;D

I looked for that posting this morning but couldn't locate it for you. It caused quite a stir on here for a week or so.

I found this wheel while THing paths or old forgotten roads. Today I may be the only person in the world who knows where it is located.

Best,

Badger
