We were down in Michigan's lower peninsula today visiting a lakehouse we own. This place is located only about 15 miles from the 19th century ghost town of Deward (named after lumbering giant David Ward).

Eventually I decided to do a little detecting.

I picked a spot about 10 feet from where I had dug a cache of rare lumber era tokens a while back (sold for $100 each on ebay). I figured it would be useless because I had totally cleaned this area out using some of the deepest detectors made.

I only hunted about 3 minutes and my detector gave me a "go for it" signal. I figured it's another stinking zinc fruit jar lid.

Down I dug and nearly gave up, but suddenly there it was! another David Ward token!

I also picked up some trash which also surprised me. I had totally cleaned this area out...or so I thought.

Thanks much for looking!

Badger

I have been meaning to say this for a while Badger .I love your avatar ! That old model A ? model T ? wheel looks cool all grown into that tree ! Is this something you saw and took a picture of on one of your treasure huntin' outtings ?

Ah 10-4 good buddy! Yes, the wheel in the tree was a post of mine way back last spring. I just can't believe it hasn't made it into the all-time great section yet! ;D

I looked for that posting this morning but couldn't locate it for you. It caused quite a stir on here for a week or so.

I found this wheel while THing paths or old forgotten roads. Today I may be the only person in the world who knows where it is located.

Best,

Badger

I found it !! Great story !! ;D ;D http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,34217.0.html

Boy, you got me? Now if I had asked "What do U think about colors?" that would of at least made some sense but "Oh, can U guess what the large round dig turned out to be? It's the last picture in the group" just doesn't add up.

I'll have to think on this one a-while :P

Oh, by-the-way, I've got this friend who asked "What is this thread about?" Ah, if you were me, what would you tell him?

I would tell him to go back to step 0. Adapting to whats going on around you.

LOL sorry it was on your Wheel In The Sky post .It was a ways down with other pictures (beer can, copper wire, arrow pointing to the wheel). It said "Oh, can U guess what the large round dig turned out to be? It's the last picture in the group".

You never said what it was.

OHhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Badger, GReat find, I just love tokens.
I'd love to come up to Mich. sometime and hunt a logging camp. Wonder if
that machine of yours will find gold coins.

Funny you should mention gold coins because one was found with this very machine. The guy I bought it from lives down south in the Civil War hunting area and he found a $1 gold piece with it.

Nautilus was primarily designed to be a professional detector. This is mainly why you won't find much about it online even though the company sells tons of machines worldwide every year.

See, in the detector world you have the common brands that all get close to the same depth. They're very good and serve the general public very well.

Then there are:

1) Nexus
2) Nautilus
etc.

The machines in this category are not well known by the average hobby person because they're in a totally different class. They're not hobbyist pop detectors, they're professional units made for specific purposes.

Some coinshooter/ring diggers wouldn't like the Nautilus. It's ugly, bulky, not a water machine, not the best for salt beaches, rather heavy, etc. And on top of all this it looks like a piece of industrial equipment.

But for what it was made for it's unsurpassed and the makers of the other detectors know this. This is why in those areas they don't include a Nexus or Nautilus in their "depth comparisons." If they do they turn the power as low as it will go ;D. The hobbyist makers generally just ignore the professional machines. They call these "specialty machines" and therefore they can justify excluding them from their tests.

When I hunt a park with the Nautilus IIB, I never have any thoughts of not going deeply enough. It's mainly just covering the ground. If a coin or piece of jewelry buried in a park, yard, ghost town, woodland area, fresh water beach, etc., can be found by any detector, it will be found with the Nautilus..period.

If I ever come upon a $1 gold piece it's mine! ;)

If you ever want to know more, PM me.

Hey Badger, great find on the token,,,, there must still be more of them there ;D I love the pen, it looks like the old bakelite plastic type?

Hi Peter, always good to hear from you.

Yes, I think there are more of these here. I've found (4) so far in one general area so I'm thinking some child back about 1900 probably was given a sack of these as play things. There are probably a bunch of them under my garage floor....LOL!

These are very serious collectables and if I were to work at it and approach the right people I could get $200 each for these. But I think I'll just keep the two I have now.

In the spring when my knee is better and the ground here is very wet I'll dig up the area where the 4 tokens were found.

How's the detecting been going for you, Peter?

Badger

Badger,My detecting has been going very well indeed..... Have a look at my Boer war posts in Todays finds.... ;D
