First picture (large group shot) is Cru'Dads lone hunts over the last few days. Highlights were 3 scrappies, 1854 French Coin, & a snake buckle.

The next set of pictures are from the 2nd Barley Field to be harvest this year. Its a site we have done for ten years & this year its important we get as much as we can, as the owners are due to sell it.

We got:

8 scrappies
1st C AD Brooch fragment
Victorian Military Button
Bits..

After less than 1 hour I found an amazing coin that I thought I would never find, as its an Eastern Empire Roman coin:

Minted in Patrae!

Silver Denarius of Mark Antony (I think we all have heard of him & Cleopatra!)
32-31 BC (not ours but MY oldest Roman Coin!)
Legion X
ANT AVG IIII VIR R P C
Praetorian Galley
LEG X, Two Standards with Eagle.

This Coin was minted for the Xth Legion by Mark Antony to gain their support in the coming Parthian Campaign. What a thought; that a Xth Roman Legionary was given this in such an historic period of history & some how it made its way to England after the invasion of AD43 (74+ years later).

I'm extremely happy to fill in another hole in my collection.:headbang:

Amazing. Having just caught "Gladiator" on TV (a re-watch of course), the images of the Roman war machine are still in my mind. I'm assuming a Roman barge on the coin? Fantastic.

very cool coin. I like the ship on it.

Just think--if you had served in Legion X they could have called you Cru-X :laughing7: Very nice coin!

Wow , what a coin ! Amazing find yet again !!! Yep , that's what it's all about right there .

It's called a Praetorian Galley (Roman Boat).

Yes on both Cru, I was told it was used as pay to the soldier for one day's work/service.
Ontario Jim's double gold hunt

Yes, a denarius was a days pay but I think in this early period, it was more like 2 days pay.

I looked at yours & it looks to be a XII not X, still a great coin, far from home.

Interesting that it was the Xth as well, because there are many legionary numbers down at this time.

Is there a reference that you know off hand that would give a value for consumables or other items for the time period?

I looked at your picture & changed my post. Yours is a XIIth Legion.

I don't know of any good reference books that have prices as well, other than coin books.

Thanks for pointing that one out, as I hadn't even noticed the II part of the image. :laughing7:

Cru, this is a fantastic coin. I don't have to confirm that for you, you already know.

Such a great piece of Roman history, right there in your hand. Congratulations on getting an early one!

Cheers,

Buck

Can see why you're happy with that find. Great Silver coin.

Mind boggling find! Man you are of to a sizzling start on those harvested fields.

Can't get too much more history from a single coin, outstanding! Congrats and HH, Mike

Huge congrats!!!

With the Saxon stuff, it's a much better start than expected because our good fields don't come online until about Sep.

Thanks, your not wrong, it's one we hoped for but thought was impossible.

That's what detecting is all about - realising dreams!
