well this morning i wake up to about ten inches of snow and the temperature is -10 (yup, ten degrees below zero, i am serious)

so i decide to look through this stack of about seventy frames of stuff i had not looked at in about a year
i ran across two frames of beads.... both have bird bone beads
one has a lot of scoria beads with a few misc including catlinite, etc
second one has a bunch of mussel shell beads which were made from the missouri river mussels
the mussel shells are poor eating but were useful for making beads , ornaments, and most of all they were pulverized and
mixed with river bank clay and ashes to make the black pottery we find here
next i found a frame of fish hooks
the 3 that i have in my hand are my largest but some place i have a bigger one that is broke.....twitkos son trovert gave it to me as a token of friendship
i also show two images of fish hook blanks, the bigger one shows an almost finished hook, while the smaller one is unfinished sitting next to two much smaller and delicate blanks
note that in the mandan culture the heavy larger hooks were made from split rib and the smaller delicate types
were made from bird bones (like turkey)
it looks like Twitko and i can't go surface hunting for a while now so we will get out our guitars and hammer out some some Blues

Great looking trays Steve. You definitely have some killer Fish Hooks and the Beads aren't nothing to sneeze at either. Awesome stuff!!

Sorry to hear about all the snow.

Yeah, 10". It looks like we'll have to hunt your basement until this is gone. And that may not be 'til May.

no more hunting for a while!
probably stop posting for a while since these were old finds and not as exciting as newly discovered pieces
nothing like a fresh find
this is a good time of the year for us to try to organize the summer stuff

Kelly , nice old Ford! You are just like me. I always get the horse before I finish the stables.

I had a Cadi like that once. Never turn the wipers on until you know the wipers are no longer frozen to the windshield. A little plastic gear in their slips and is hard to get back in time. Learned that in the school of hard knocks. 10" man. I hate snow!!

I know I wouldnt care if you showed some old finds once in a while. Maybe while you are in the basement you can find some stuff to post from the past. I like seeing all of your artifacts.

thanks rock
i might just do that
i was maybe thinking they weren't drawing much interest as the new fresh finds

larson1951. thank you for sharing those! I love the way you have them displayed.
Yes, it would be nice to see more.

thanks
my friend Russy is the person that put all my trays together

In your last tray, the two pieces that have holes drilled out, what are they? Reaper posted a bone flute a few days back that I haven't been able to shake from my mind. Could they be part of a bone flute? If not, have you ever heard of a bone flute being found in your area? Thanks for the show Larson!! You are certainly a good friend. If the snow doesn't melt pretty soon, head my direction, you can scratch through some strange soil.

Just think of the size those fish must have been! Would love to have seen that.

Great looking artifacts and displays there, Steve! I wish we have fish hooks like that here! Unfortunately, our weather and soils aren't conducive for preserving perishables like that. I'm very jealous.

the pieces in the last image are two fish hook banks
each one would hopefully make two hooks one right side up and one upside down
they would try to get two hooks just like the one in my hand next to the two blanks
the one in my hand is an unfinished hook just like the kind the two blanks were intended to make
get what i mean?
also the image on the lower left shows a heavier hook sitting next to a broke blank
i believe that the drilling of the holes was the first step in making a pair of hooks
it seems like drilling those holes greatly reduced the chance of having the blank break when cutting out the two hooks

I got ya. A preform of sorts. Cool. Now, about the flute, ever heard of one found local? Those hooks are awesome, but that flute blew my mind. Made me think of Ivan Anderson in primitive years. Lol.

Some really incredible frames there Steve!
I bet they hooked into some really big'ole Missour'a River Cats with those hooks in your hand.

Those unfinished bone blanks are pretty cool too! Always interesting to see how artifacts were made.

Thanks for sharing....let's see the rest of those 70 frames, when you get a chance.

Also got a killer box of 'facts' from Witco, I need to post soon, but he sent a really nice bone bead in it, very cool! don't find any bone so far in this part of Ohio.

Incredible artifacts. Thanks so much for sharing them with us. Just beautiful. The snow pictures just reinforced what a wuss I am. I made a fire tonight here in San Antonio because the temperature dropped into the high 40's and the cat and I were cold.
