Been called to serve my country..By going to jury duty...Im only 20! Opinions?

Re: Been called to serve my country..By going to jury duty...I'm only 20! Opinions?

Jury duty is not "just because it's the law". Jury duty is a responsibility of the priviledge of being a citizen of this wonderful country. No, I would never say our country is perfect, but it's a damn site better than anything else this world has to offer. Now put yourself in the place of a person accused of a crime that is innocent or even a person being sued for enough $$$ to ruin his life. Who would you want hearing your case and determining innocense or guilt. Would you want a bunch of yahoos and yokels that couldn't find a way to get out of jury duty or would you prefer a young intelligent college student? It is supposed to be a jury of peers, but sometimes your "peer" may be one that crawled out from under a rock and thinks everyone is guilty no matter what. Luckily that doesn't happen too often because there are civic minded individuals that will serve. I can understand your delima with school. I once lost a complete grade point, got a B even though I had a 98+ average in a class because I was subpoenaed to be in court several days on a dope dealer I had arrested. Fair, no, but life isn't always fair , but it is up to us, you to make it as fair as possible. Now if you insist on getting out of jury duty you can, maybe because of school or maybe because of your health problems. But in the end it is up to you. Oh, and in my State and County names are drawn from the pool of registered voters. So, if you're 18 and registered to vote, you are eligible. The names are drawn randomly by computer and you can be called several times or even never. But I would be honored to serve. You should be too. And I'd be the first to admit some laws are dumb, but this is not one of them. Being illegal to hitch your horse to a fireplug is a dumb one! Monty

Actually, jury duty may be one of the few things you could take part in during your lifetime, that will directly effect the life of another person. You, at your age especially, should be anxious to show the world that you are ready to take on some adult responsibilities and make intelligent, responsible decisions when presented the facts. I posted, on another thread, a letter that a RAF pilot wrote to his mother in case he were to die during the war. I'm going to cut and paste just one sentence from that letter. Mind you, I'm not likening you to an "animal" as is mentioned in the letter, I'm just showing you how some men act and feel when their country is under attack. He wasn't FORCED to serve either and he did die.
"Those who just eat and sleep, prosper and procreate, are no better than animals if all their lives they are at peace."
And Monty, I couldn't agree with you more!

Jury duty is a great way to learn how the court system works in this country. I've served on two juries one a civil trial and one a criminal trial and was very impressed how the juries were able to come to a fair decision based on the instructions and information we received. I look forward to doing it in the future.
I was lucky enough to be working for employers that compensated me for my time.
I think everyone should serve for the experience as long as it does not cause a hardship.

Ok, here's how you get out of jury duty:

If you notice, when they send you the notice for jury duty it says you are "served". If you do not respond, they have no way of knowing if you were actually served or not and there is nothing they can do about it. Don't respond to the summons and they have no way of proving whether you received your notice or not. If you have already sent your response in stating that you received your notice then it's too late. :-\
Bad advice. I received a summons to report for jury duty a few years back... received it the day AFTER I was supposed to report. I tossed it on my desk not thinking too much about it since the date had already passed. I ran into the clerk of court in town a few days later and told him what had happened. He told me I needed to call the judge ASAP because a warrant had been issued for my arrest for failure to appear. I callled the judge and explained it to him. He made me come down to his office and explain it face to face. He studied me carefully as I explained it, and after he determined to his satisfaction that I was not lying, he agreed to revoke the arrest warrant on the condition that I respond to the summons for the next jury selection, a summons which he handed me before I walked out of his office. For the whole time I was in his office explaining myself I did not know if I was going to walk out to go home, or walk out in handcuffs. DO NOT IGNORE YOUR SUMMONS.

As soon as the lawyers start talking to you, ask a lot of questions about the death penalty and ask them if it's OK if you watch. I'm pretty sure you'll be back in class before the day is over.

Re: Been called to serve my country..By going to jury duty...I'm only 20! Opinions?

I got called for jury duty first when I was 18, because they went by the voter registration lists. Now most places use the driver's license list. I never had to serve again because I was a police officer, and for some reason they thought I would be biased. I got out of that line of work and two years ago got called and in spite of my background, was selected to serve on the jury for a criminal trial, and amazingly found the guy not guilty. (The evidence just didn't support the case, sorry.) As far as worrying about the murderer you may find guilty, no problem. You're the jury, vote the death penalty! It's his friends on the outside you have to worry about anyway. We're guaranteed a trial by a jury of our peers, but don't think that when you're arrested for DUI you will have a jury of twelve drunks in the box. Man up and go do it. I don't believe your school has a legal leg to stand on for penalizing you for jury duty. Once the DA and the defense attorney question you in selection, YOU probably won't get picked anyway. (Well, the defense may want you)

civic duty
n : the responsibilities of a citizen [syn: civic
responsibility]

Jury duty is one of your civic duties and it is the law.

You can plead your circumstance at the selection and you may or may not be excused.

We all have to obay the law even if we disagree with it. Just a sad fact of life.

I tried to scroll down this, and all I could think is, as an es serviceman from another country, Having served, I am proud to have served my Country in what ever way I could. OK, minimum term on Subs, back, in the eighties, that still counts for something

Since you're in the Seattle, WA area; if you REALLY want to get out of jury duty, just walk into the courtroom with a big Bible under your arm. IF they get as far as asking you any questions, tell them you vote guilty on everything because we're all sinners. That'll make those liberal pukes choke and they'll get you out of there so fast your head will spin. LOL

OK, so I think this is really stupid. I have been called to serve as a Juror for Seattle, WA. I am currently a full time student, yet they are making me do Jury Duty. I think it will be fun, but the only problem is why do we have to do it? I am also having a math test the same time that my Jury Duty is at, so I have to see if my teacher will give me the math test two days before the actual test.

Since Jury Duty will be two days, then that only gives me one days to study for my final. I have Jury Duty the 14th and 15th and have my final for my math class on the 17th. This quarter has been really stressful, as I am taking 3 classes and studying for my certification, which hopefully I will take sometime at the end of June or in the middle of July.

If you are wondering why they called me so early, I think it is that I cannot be drafted into the military because of my medical condition. Currently I have had 4 heart surgeries through out my life and since I am considered a class D in the draft, I would be the very last one to go if the war got to serious and they ran out of class A,B, and C's to defend our country.

I think Jury Duty is stupid and a waste of time because mainly I do not want to put a murder in jail because he may come after me and KILL me.

What are your opinions?

Your fear is unfounded and comes from watching too many movies. I have sat on several juries and that includes one for first degree felony murder. It was no picnic and nobody treated it like a game.

You can ask for your jury service to be deferred due to your tests, but you should not try to avoid it completely unless you have a serious medical condition that prevents you from serving, which does not sound like your case.

Jury duty is not a waste of time and it is not stupid. It is probably one of the most important civic functions you'll serve in your lifetime and no, I am not exaggerating.
