I would go. Its your duty. Talk with your teacher and make arrangements. Your teacher will respect you. Its also the law. Besides it will be fun. I enjoyed it. They will pay you a few bucks. I think $15/day.

Problem is if you are on a murder case it will take longer than a couple days. It could take weeks. Dont worry about a criminal coming after you because there are 7 jurors, I believe, and he has no way of knowing how you voted. Besides you may find that he is innocent.

If you really cant make it then find an excuse to get out of it. But I dont see it as any big deal. Chances are you will not be picked anyway because there were about 40 potential jurors and they only choose 7 or 8..

Dont worry about a draft. There wont be any. They often obtain juror names from Drivers Licsense renewals.

1/ Why in hell do they ask a 20 year old still classed as a "kid" to decide on what could be someones whole life,depending on the decision?
2/ What the hell has flag waving and flying in a B52 got to do with this? You were proud to serve your country..fine.The people who demonstrated angrily and spat on you when you came home wern't proud.Wonder how many of those patriotic Americans ended up on jury duty?
(And anyone who is patriotic and can look at the big picture honestly and without bias would never say America is "the best country in the world"!)

4/ Ah the 60's hippie Utopia.Wasn't Charlie Manson a respected member of that?

5/ In the UK only "honest" pillars of society can be called for jury duty.Go talk to a cop with a joint hanging from your mouth.Charge sheet = never get a jury service notice ever again!..works wonders,trust me!

They don't "ask," they tell you you're GOING TO. And that's just as wrong in America as it is in Russia, or anyplace else. Maybe even more so, since we claim to be all about the opposite of such things.

OMG I dont know where to start. You sound like an American hater and I wouldnt have the slightest idea why.

Here in America we have the right to a trial by a jury of our peers. We have the option of being judged by others like ourselves, not just a judge or a chosen few. I see no reason that a 20 year old can not serve on a jury. I see nothing that signals he is not an honest citizen. There are 7 members of a jury of different ages and backgrounds and it takes all 7 votes to convict. I was called to jury duty and I was honored to have been picked and it was such a little thing to to for such a great country as ours. Maybe those complaining about jury duty would be happier somewhere else.

Ill let some others respond to the rest of your post. Its just to wild for me.

OK I may have misunderstood. You probably only know what you read or hear on the news. As far as Great Britain goes, I have nothing bad to say about your country nor do we hear bad things about you in the news.

I guess 12 is better than 7. Do you have many deadlocks?.

I say you should do your civic duty and serve on jury...at the most it be a week out of your life and you will be thankful for the experience...a lot of men died in wars when they were younger than you so that you can whine and get out of your civic duty....buck up and serve on jury.

havnt been on this forum in awhile. been so busy! Cant believe this became a rising issue with 72 replies. anyways, i went on the website the week after i got my notice and rescheduled the day after my birthday when school is not in session. Its amazing what the internet can do! I had no idea I could re-schedule on the internet.

Hey thats great. I didnt know either. While you are not allowed to discuss the case in process, I would hope you will tell us how it went when its all over. It will be a great learning experience and there are a lot of members here that are proud of you.

I understand your feelings. Things are changing and not for the better. I just dont think jury duty is one of the problems. Its easy enough to get out of. Most people I know simply toss it in the trash. Nothing will happen. You wont be arrested. I just feel that its not too much to ask to serve jury duty. Its the "decent" thing to do. Someday you may need someone to do it for you.

Yes,we have many deadlocks..they all get resolved though eventually.

Far as i know you have to be over 21..though it could be 18.

The Manson thing was in response to someone saying the hippie era was a "Utopia"....i disagreed,lol.

I don't understand why we can't separate issues. I have no problem with people doing duty, including jury duty. It's the FORCING of it that is wrong. If this country is filled with patriots, then where's the problem. If not, then why would we want them on the jury anyway?
I'm not saying this issue is the greatest wrong being done in this country, but it is the issue being discussed here.

OK I guess you would prefer it voluntary. Well its a good question why we dont. Maybe we wouldnt get enough volunteers or maybe the nuts would volunteer too often. Myself, I prefer a cross section of people and not necessarily patriots on my jury.

I dont think its a big deal to be forced to serve on jury because its so little to ask once or twice in your lifetime. Keep in mind that its easy to get out of jury duty just toss it in the trash. If that man had just tossed it instead of writing bold profanities he wouldnt have been noticed. IMO the government should start fining those who refuse to show up. It would be better than raising taxes.

America may NOT be the greatest country in the world. Of course that would depend on the criteria used to make a final decision on which one really is best and why.
Let's say Canada just got attacked by a foreign power using nuclear weapons. Who shall we call? Let's start with Switzerland. Oh, forgot, they're "neutral". That's the country that misused money and items after the war that had been placed there by the Jews. It's also where the Nazis kept their plunder from defeated countries during the war. Of course prostitution is legal there so maybe they win?? Maybe the Libyan Airforce or Mexican Navy will help out. Heck, we could call on some Knights from England. That's it, the fearless, loyal Knights of England!! No, wait. The knights just aren't what they used to be. Now we get Paul Mc Cartney and Elton John (if his husband will let him go)
Gee, I guess we'll just have to get those losers from America to step up to the plate yet again. We'll be nice to them and let them bury their war dead on our land like the French did at Normandy for over 9,000 Americans that died there.
