Big cats in East TN

Kuger? Do you think pouring wolf urine at the entrance to my barn and woodshed would deter raccoons and opossums from going inside and making a mess?

B. where can a guy in INdy get wolf urine?
Jeff... how the hell will you get the wolf to pi$$ into the bottle..:laughing7:

SS

well, that's why I asked an expert!

Jeffers, I use tea tree oil to deter raccoons woodrats etc from spaces...:)

:laughing7:.............first ya gotta get the wolf pizz!!...........I have never used wolf whizz, but it is basically just dog urine which most urban animals are quite accustomed to........lion urine will work to keep deer,rabbits,etc(prey)away....supposedly.I know Tiger urine is a HUGE attractant we have used when trapping(cage trapping)Mtn lion and Bobcat.....hard to get though

Squig, been meaning to give yo more detail on roundworm....I will.....its contractible much easier than the ways you described......

Wouldn't the raccoon roundworm be the same one transmitted by our domestic cats? I think I am sunk on that one...lol!

It is not the same...the Raccoon round worm is Baylisascaris Procyonis...in cats is Toxocara cati...both are transmitted similarly, but have much different effects in humans.I urge anybody to look nto the Casey Reed story...one I was heavily involved with.

Thanks never for the info. .I should have known and researched that...:(
Looks like many years ago when I was trained , i was given inaccurate info...yikes!

Ditto on the moth balls. Warning; they are very tiny. You'll need tweezers and a magnifying glass. Kidding!

Moth balls, when used in abundance, have been known to work.

When I have used them, I put them in a sock since they are poisonous! !

Dear Mz Squiggy, I cannot believe you recommend putting poison out for natures little animals!! My thinking of the wolf urine was to scare them away.

Hey Jeffers, that's why my first choice is tea tree oil....but, I always put the month balls in a sock..just in case!!
You know I LOVE these guys with a passion!
I have never know anyone to tear open the sock. ..also I sometimes use a water sensor called a scarecrow. ..it's on line..70.00 Scares them away and hooks up to a hose....goes off intermittently when it senses something moving from a pretty good distance....must warn you some raccoons have a midnight party with it...lol!

YES!!!I learned the Moth Ball toxicity the hard way....we had a skunk under a school room, that was a possible Public Safety due to the fact the skunk was not afraid of the kids at all,and I could not catch it with a cage trap.We decided it was best to just make him not want to be there......so Moth balls......well,made some kids sick and some parents freaked!!!!Yea,not good......

Squig, yes,Raccoon R.W. is a unreal little critter.....when Casey's tragedy struck little was known about them.A group of eggs were kept in formaldehyde for study.....when they were examined under the microscope, they hatched!!!!They lay hundreds of thousands of eggs that have a super glue like coating that stick very well(1100 degree water is needed to detach them)and if they are on your fingers or if your dog gets them on their nose and licks your face etc...you can end up with them either orally or nasally they may live inside of you for years before you know you have them.Several people have died from them, and Casey is a vegetable.Yea.......I had been working with the same coon population for years when I learned this little tid bits....made me a bit ....."worried...."I did have one of my cherished working hounds contract it,and was fatal.Their was a woman from the Santa Clara Animal Control, that 10 years ago was really studying these and did a fantastic talk....Her name is Laurie Frasier.

I want to add that this was over 10 years ago,and those details are just what I recall, and as said much was not known at that time.I havent stayed up to date with new info so,I am sure much more is known now.I do know at that time, they tested raccoons in the Pacific Grove area.....and like 80% were positive(was highest ever recorded at that time)
As you know many diseases in wildlife, and as you know as well, its important to stay vigilant in practicing utmost caution.Phnuemonic Plague, was always my biggest fear

I know ...we have to watch for all these diseases...Uh!
We worm our young raccoons every 10 days while in captivity.
Its a wonder more people don't contract them from dogs etc!
As far as the three plague illnesses, they occasionally worry me as well. I don't know anyone personally who has contracted any of them, but I sure don't want to be the first.
Do you know anyone who has come down with any form of the plague? If so what we're the circumstances?
Thanks again for sharing your knowledge in this area..:)

Good on you!!We used to do a lot of disease monitoring from samples, taken from different animals and it used to really hit home when "Positives",would come back,or the CDC would request a new test for something new.

We do/did a Bubonic plague test strip(Nibuto)which was dipped in the blood to be tested and sent in....we would then get back a regional report on Positives, some years there were actually quite a few....scary when its contracted from a flea bite and the symptoms are Flu-like.....walk into the E-Room and tell em you may have the "Plague",.....its kind of embarrassing....:laughing7:Anyway,yes I do know of several people that have contracted Bubonic....we always were he ones to monitor the levels after a fatality.......through trapping ground squirrels and brushing them for fleas in a special box....that was never very fun.We did one test in a Park In Nevada(it wasnt a site of a contraction....just a pre caution)we had an off the charts # come back pos.!!!!!Nobody ever did come down with it though so.....any way.....yes,just about every time we were on a case it was a case of ground squirrels in the area...one a hunter contracted it from an Antelope. Now phnuemonic........no I dont.....but lions tested were very high in Positives(a study I was only told about)scary thing about it,is its contracted through the air and is fatal....no cure.(I just read that it now is,if caught,treatable......
I have Lymes Disease, have had Valley Fever, have had Rocky Mtn Spotted Fever, and have had the rabies treatment twice......stay vigilant!!!!
http://www.cdc.gov/plague/maps/index.html

Not that you have to be concerned but when I was working in Nevada Haunta was a HUGE fear......HUGE!!!Scariest sound you can hear at night,is the sound of mice in your field Camp trailer!!!!!!!!

I certainly will!!! I hope you stay well!!! I have an infectious disease physician I work with.
I have been treated for Lyme once, but thank goodness that's all..:)

Kuger..Ya think ground squirrels are more problematic than tree squirrels when it comes to plague?
