Big cats in East TN

My point is that even though you've been presented with several examples of why you are wrong, you still argue the point.

Your kind crack me up, you know everything, talk in circles and when shown why you are wrong, you get defensive. By your own admission you are not an expert. I posted two different resources that show you there are black cats, yet you argue there are none!

So you tell me how those black jaguars got black then! smh!

wow!!!First off, where did I say I wasnt an expert? My definition of an expert is somebody who has worked with something there entire life(made their living doing so),has been scholastically schooled in a field, has been involved with a number of studies, has been employed by both the Federal Gov. as well as three different States, and worked in both Mexico and Canada with felines....am I an expert?Maybe not.You be the judge...thats what I have done. What I have stated is easily found at your finger tips, you do the research smart guy.

Your so smart, you show me where I have talked in a circle, and one point any point where I am wrong!
You need to go back and read this whole post...THERE IS NO BREED OF BLACK CATS period bottom line. That is not my word that is biological fact.

SINCE YOU DONT READ BLACK CATS ARE MELANISTIC.....LOOK IT UP

I believe this photo might help

edit: this quote came from the same site as the 'black cat' photo in question:

the jaguar can be distinguished by the presence of small dots or irregular shapes within the larger rosette markings, a more stocky and muscular body and a shorter tail. Melanistic or black jaguars (see below) are common in certain parts of its range and are often confusingly labelled 'Black Panthers', a name which is also applied to black Leopards. In this melanistic form the cats are more difficult to separate, however the jaguars large head and stocky forelimbs are often a good way to differentiate between the two cats.

yes,and two melanistic cats do not throw black offspring!!Simple biology folks....I shake my head (OZARK)hell yes,I get defensive when I have stated the same facts at least 25 times in this thread!!!Know it all?Read my resume above.....but no I dont know it all.Melanism is elementary though!!

........also there was a retired Warden that piped in agreeing with everything I have said....he must not know what he speaks either.....

Ozark....evidently you dont read your own link

There are no authenticated cases of truly melanistic cougars (pumas). Melanistic cougars have never been photographed or shot in the wild and none has ever been bred. Unconfirmed sightings, known as the "North American black panther", are currently attributed to errors in species identification by non-experts, and by the memetic exaggeration of size. Black panthers in the American Southeast feature prominently in Choctaw folklore where, along with the owl, they are often thought to symbolize Death.
In his Histoire Naturelle (1749), Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon, wrote of the "Black Cougar":[SUP][6][/SUP]
"M. de la Borde, King’s physician at Cayenne, informs me, that in the [South American] Continent there are three species of rapacious animals; that the first is the jaguar, which is called the tiger; that the second is the couguar [sic], called the red tiger, on account of the uniform redness of his hair; that the jaguar is of the size of a large bull-dog, and weighs about 200 pounds [90 kg]; that the cougar is smaller, less dangerous, and not so frequent in the neighbourhood of Cayenne as the jaguar; and that both these animals take six years in acquiring their full growth. He adds, that there is a third species in these countries, called the black tiger, of which we have given a figure under the appellation of the black cougar. The head is pretty similar to that of the common cougar; but the animal has long black hair, and likewise a long tail, with strong whiskers. He weighs not much above forty pounds [18 kg]. The female brings forth her young in the hollows of old trees."
This "black cougar" was most likely a margay or ocelot, which are under 40 pounds (18 kg) in weight, live in trees, and do have melanistic phases.
Another description of a black cougar[SUP][7][/SUP] was provided by Thomas Pennant:
Black tiger, or cat, with the head black, sides, fore part of the legs, and the tail, covered with short and very glossy hairs, of a dusky color, sometimes spotted with black, but generally plain: Upper lips white: At the corner of the mouth a black spot: Long hairs above each eye, and long whiskers on the upper lip: Lower lip, throat, belly, and the inside of the legs, whitish, or very pale ash-color: Paws white: Ears pointed: Grows to the size of a heifer of a year old: Has vast strength in its limbs.-- Inhabits Brasil and Guiana: Is a cruel and fierce beast; much dreaded by the Indians; but happily is a scarce species.
According to his translator Smellie (1781), the description was taken from two black cougars exhibited in London some years previously.

which is exactly what I have stated all along!!

leopards are not,and have never been native to North America

Jaguars are making a small appearance in the S.W.

question.......somebody please tell me,how a person who knows an answer to something,is supposed to give that answer and not be accused of being a "know it all"....???

Colin...when time allows...I want to comment on several pictures in that series.....but will say, even if there are Big Black Cats...its easily explained that they are likely escaped pet, leopard,or Jaguars(Likely Leopards)which both have higher tendencies to be melanistic
Yes I know, I was just pointing out we have them, I know there escaped cats, and I also know there are no breed of black cats, you just have to convince half of your country men :laughing7: But there is one interesting link about type of large cat, that might be of interest.

Thanks guys...just baffling to me...I guess a guy is supposed to just sit back and let the dumbing of America continue......??Sorry I have a real issue with myth's and pure BS being passed on as truth.Colin your right, some folks just choose to believe in Santa and the Easter Bunny...we are in a time where all the facts are right at your finger tips...dont know what the issue is.

That link is very interesting,I will have to sit down and read it...I just glanced through the pictures...the tracks are dog tracks, and a couple are house cats....a couple sure look like large Jags or leopards and LIKELY ARE!!!One thing I want to point out is that Jags, are very distinct in their stance and stature...very short and stocky

The Black Great Dane lived on Polly Wolly Road. First house on the right ! :laughing7:

fun thread. From all I have learned I'd say Kuger is 100% accurate.
In fact I plan on calling him next time I see that Sabre toothed tiger in my field!

Squig, wont dis agree, but will say, that if the lions in "your",area do,then all do......may I ask how they ever confirmed that t was a lion doing the screaming? As said,a lifetime around lions and in lion country,I have never confirmed a lion scream...not saying they dont

I would also like to add to Ozarks remark about "Expert",I have taught several courses to State Wildlife Agencies on lion predation and sign identification, and have participated in two lion/human fatality cases.......That all being said, nobody ever knows it all!

Good question Kuger. ..we actually saw it running away from the area where the screams came from..now I guess it could have killed something, but even as a child I remember hearing the sound in the dark. ..is it possible that it depends on what area they are in? I sure don't know...

Squig,I would have to say it might have been......I cant think of any animal that would scream?I would love to see a lion make the sound!A lion out there is the same lion out here.....if yours do,these do.......many folks out here claim they have heard em too.I did hear two lions breeding and it was a LOUD terrible sounding event, there were some sounds that could be said sounded like a scream....?There are some great books written by,and about lion men,Frank Doble has done a few,Wiley Carrol(a personal friend of mine)did a fantastic book about several different questions....how lions scratch a scent mound being one,and discusses the lion scream....Ben Lilly, and the Lee Brothers are a couple more....none if I recall ever reported verifying the sound.Again I will say....I am totally open to the statement that they may.....just...well you know....I have said it many times already.....:laughing7:
