i can't believe this
this was monday 7-4-2010 hunt
i am overwhelmed at this even if the handle is broke
the weeds are gonna get too high before i have a chance to walk this entire 40 acre field then it might be a long time before enough rain will come again
i really think this thing is fierce

I think the underside groove is an observation of the maker, that the bird's lower beak was smaller? that's why I called it artsy. Hey Neogeo! Make one of these

a pelican has a look kinda like that but i don't think it is relevant?

Does the groove look deep enough to have held a copper or flint bladelet? Maybe it could have been some type of special knife?

i saw another bird once that had the groove under the bill
i don't think they had anything like a blade in them
but who knows?

here is some info about the crane head or bird head
it was either a ceremonial piece
or a part of a medicine man's paraphernalia
the last image will show what the design on each side of the handle would have looked like

i have only seen a few of these and about half of them had the groove underneath
i think it was just the work of a skilled artist trying to make the very nicest thing he or she could by trying to add as much detail as possible

Alright just follow me on this..(caution!!!!We will be going way out on a limb..)(so watch your footing lol)

From that pic..and the under part of of Larsons...It could be a thunder bird...Now those fossils were found all over the place.(From here in Tx.To way up there and all in between.Way ancient man found one or some,and thought them to be still living animals.Turned them into myth..I.E..Bringing the thunder..Thunderbird.)It is not a stretch for a shaman to have its likeness in his bag.
