i can't believe this
this was monday 7-4-2010 hunt
i am overwhelmed at this even if the handle is broke
the weeds are gonna get too high before i have a chance to walk this entire 40 acre field then it might be a long time before enough rain will come again
i really think this thing is fierce

I don't know how I missed this post before. What amazing pieces!!!!!!!!!! There is surely a similarity between the Ohio Fort Ancients, and the site you are collecting on. That site you have is the best I have seen. Do you know the dates on the site? I am guessing Protohistoric? Did any museums/archies ever do any documentation on it? I am not at all suggesting you should invite them in.

Larson do you have any migratory cranes in your area?. Here we have the Sandhill cranes that fly over in large flocks every year. You can hear then for miles and see them up high in the thermals. You are in the Central flyway and have whooping cranes and Sandhills migrating through.You can always tell when winter is approaching by hearing the cranes . They have hunting seasons for the sandhill cranes in your area as well. I am betting its a crane and not a turkey Here is a sandhill and then a whooping crane picture. There are many variations in these species..

here is some info about the crane head or bird head
it was either a ceremonial piece
or a part of a medicine man's paraphernalia
the last image will show what the design on each side of the handle would have looked like

i have only seen a few of these and about half of them had the groove underneath
i think it was just the work of a skilled artist trying to make the very nicest thing he or she could by trying to add as much detail as possible

You finds are way more interesting than a couple guys sifting thru junk, only to get stoked by an old oil can.
