Nice awl find

Found some pottery and shell also. Plus lots of bone. And some broken flint. Watching it dry right now!

The shells help to neutralize the soil acids and preserve the bone. I`ll bet your pottery is tempered with crushed shells.

Don't let the bone dry out..soak it in watered down white glue at least.
Then it will be stable.

If your bone finds are from a wet environment white glue and water is your best bet...if dry when found then "Gomers solution" is best.

I don't mean to post all over your thread but if you don't want your bone artifacts to fall apart ..they need to be stabilized ... unless you live in a few places out west.

I'm glad you posted that I have a few pieces and didn't know that what's the mixture ratio and time

The time will depend on the size of the piece.
The mixture needs to be thin.. the water is only carrying the glue in.. so you want it thin in order to penetrate.
"Milky"
The atlatl handle I soaked for five days..the bone needle 24 hrs.

Thanks for all the input guys. The awl is actually in pretty good condition compared to some bone I have found in the past. I will probably treat it with Duco/acetone. Then glue it together with the Duco. I have never used the milky Elmers glue method Gator. The bones you posted look great so it must work the same. All the pottery I find is shell tempered Rega-PA. You could be right about the shell helping preserve the bones. I'll post the awl showing the other side when I get it repaired. I only dug in this spot for around 3 hrs. Should be more artifacts. It took me a couple of months on the last area I dug like this one. HH
