Bucket list find for me today

The weather finally warmed up the last few days and the ground is thawed again so I got out for a few hours of hunting. Picking up where I left off at my "hunted out hot spot" that gave me a bunch of silvers at the end of 2017.

As always, I was hoping for silver but it didnt come today. First find was a wheat cent so I was really hopeful. This badge came out early in the hunt but I could't read anything on it and didnt think too much of it. Once I got home and cleaned, I was overjoyed with what I had. I have been hoping to dig a chauffeurs badge for many years just because they are a cool piece of history and they dont get found often. Mine is from the very first year of driver's licenses issued in Oklahoma. I wish there was a way to find out who it was issued. That would be an awesome thing to track down.

So they made chauffeur tags out of metal! I did not know that. Very nice piece of history. I wonder what the driver had to do to get the license in 1938?

Strangely, there is almost zero information that I can find online. The only thing I have read so far is that Oklahoma passed the first drivers license law in 1937, apparently following suit of other states, and the ever growing number of paved highways and state roads and autos. The first drivers test, and licenses were given in 1938 (apparently only to "new" drivers and all previous drivers were grandfathered to not need it). I also read that the first licenses were a metal badge that was to be worn on the drivers cap. That sounds weird for a drivers license, but maybe there is confusion here. I'm still looking into this interesting bit of history, hopefully I can find out something more.

yeah, well, where I live didnt have anyone here until the 1890s, and most of the people who came were poor, and many are still poor. While I'm sure there are a few gold coins in the ground somewhere, they would be so rare I probably have a better chance of winning the lottery. I prefer silver and historic relics because those are attainable.

I’ve never found one either so Jason you’re doing good my friend. I’ve hunted up here in fort smith and found some old dog taxes including one from 1890 but still no DL’s. I’ve seen one before from a guy who owns a coin shop here from the early days but that is something I haven’t gotten yet. Sad part is I find more civil war relics in fort smith than I do coins or any other relics from the cities past
